Remain In Me (John 15:1-8)

I am the true vine and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. (New International Version)

In the New International Version of the Bible, the word “remain” is repeated 8 times in 8 verses. The original Greek word translated as “remain” is μένω (pronounced “men-oh”). It means to linger in the present moment; to be mindful to ourselves and our situations; to stay connected.

Remaining with Jesus means we that have continual unbroken connection of unity and fellowship with him.

In order to have a connection, there must be two ends to connect. The Jesus connection is always there. We are the other connection. And, frankly, we can be flaky – pulling away and coming close – which is why Jesus gave a repeated invitation to keep the connection.

Some other translations of John 15:4 may help to fill out an understanding of this invitation to remain in Christ (emphasis mine):

Stay joined to me, and I will stay joined to you. Just as a branch cannot produce fruit unless it stays joined to the vine, you cannot produce fruit unless you stay joined to me. (CEV)

Live in me, and I will live in you. A branch cannot produce any fruit by itself. It must stay attached to the vine. In the same way, you cannot produce fruit unless you live in me. (GW)

Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. (NKJV)

Stay connected to me, and I will stay connected to you! A branch cannot produce fruit on its own but only if it has a vital connection to the vine. In the same way, there’s no way you can produce fruit at all, unless you have a meaningful connection with me. (my own translation)

The task of every Christian is to remain connected to Jesus. So, the question is: How do we keep the connection without breaking it? How can we be fruitful?

Focus on the Relationship

Christianity, at its core, is a living relationship with Jesus. Yes, doctrine is important; and it’s necessary to know the basic tenets of Christian faith. Yet, any knowledge we gain about Christianity is to be channeled into developing the relationship.

Bible trivia is only as good as the understanding we apply to build the relationship. Knowledge makes us proud of ourselves, while love makes us helpful to others. Knowledge makes us feel important, yet love strengthens the Church. Knowledge puffs up but love builds up. (1 Corinthians 8:1)

Christ’s redemption – his incarnation, holy life, death, resurrection, and ascension – are meant to restore the severed relationship with humanity. Only knowing doctrinal truth is not the same as using the doctrines to connect with God in a loving relationship.

It takes planning, dedication, time, and effort to grow and maintain our relationship with Jesus Christ. If we fail to use our time and energy on that relationship, then the leaves on the branch begin to wither.

Scripture, silence, solitude, community, prayer, giving, and fasting have always been at the center of Christian practices designed to put us in a position to hear and receive from God.

Relate Well to the Other Branches

The Church is a living growing community. Christ and the Church have a vital union with each other. I used to live in a place where there was a tree that had grown up next to an old fence post. The tree grew tall and engulfed the post to the degree that now you can only see part of the fence post.

To remove the post, you would have to remove the tree; the two have become one. Not only are we connected to the trunk, but we’re also connected to each other. We are all part of the same vine; we aren’t separate vines. So, we all need to do our part in the vine’s system.

Keep Close to the Vine

My grandmother had a grapevine in her backyard when I was a kid. I have firsthand understanding that the sweetest, juiciest, biggest, and best tasting grapes are found in the middle, securely next to the vine’s stem.

The sour grapes are found at the end of the branches. Show me a sourpuss Christian, and I’ll show you a Christian who is not close to Christ. Show me a sweet Christian and I’ll show you a believer who daily works at their close connection with Jesus.

Pruning is Necessary

Healthy vines need pruning, at least once a year; ideally, twice a year, in the Spring before budding, and in Autumn, after the harvest. Without pruning, the vine’s ability to produce good and abundant grapes is compromised. The grapevine’s branches need to be kept short because the nutrients are concentrated in and near the vine stem.

Pruning hurts. From the perspective of us branches, pruning feels like judgment. But it isn’t. Even though pruning is painful, it makes us healthier and tastier.

It’s better to do a few things well, rather than try and do a lot of things for which there is limited time and energy. So, do some spiritual pruning twice a year!

Know Why You are Connected

Yes, Christians have a connection with Jesus so that we are saved from sin, death, and hell. And, yes, we are connected to experience abundant life. Yet, the goal of that connection is to produce succulent fruit.

If there are no grapes on the vine, the vine is useless. Grapevines exist to produce grapes. Christians and Churches exist for the life of the world, to produce the fruit of righteousness consistent with our Christ-connected union: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)

The Church is not an end in itself, but exists for the life of the world. Using other metaphors, Jesus said:

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:13-16, NIV)

Pray

If we live in union with Christ – with the words and ways of Jesus powerfully within us—then ask for anything, and it will be done. Prayer is both an event that anyone can do, as well as a spiritual practice that needs growth and development.

The words of Jesus are the nutrients for our spiritual life. When those words find a home within us, there is a divine/human conversation. Christ promises that if we just ask, we’ll receive.

As the relationship with Christ grows, we learn to be thoughtful about our asking. Flippantly or selfishly asking for things disrespects the connection we enjoy with God. Claiming or demanding answers to prayer demeans the relationship. We can also dishonor God by simply not asking, at all.

Prayer is the delivery system for receiving our nutrients; and is also the means of delivering fruitful blessing so that the world might live. Jesus modeled a prayer for us that is grounded in connection and unity with the Father:

I am not praying just for these followers. I am also praying for everyone else who will have faith because of what my followers will say about me. I want all of them to be one with each other, just as I am one with you and you are one with me. I also want them to be one with us. Then the people of this world will believe that you sent me.

I have honored my followers in the same way that you honored me, in order that they may be one with each other, just as we are one. I am one with them, and you are one with me, so that they may become completely one. Then this world’s people will know that you sent me. They will know that you love my followers as much as you love me.

Father, I want everyone you have given me to be with me, wherever I am. Then they will see the glory that you have given me, because you loved me before the world was created. Good Father, the people of this world don’t know you. But I know you, and my followers know that you sent me. I told them what you are like, and I will tell them even more. Then the love that you have for me will become part of them, and I will be one with them. (John 17:20-26, CEV)

We must live and pray consistent with who we are, and what our mission is. The Church is to be one as God is One. Christians are to pray for unity because the triune God is always united. Believers everywhere need to remain in Christ through a vital connection of loving God and loving their neighbors. Amen.

The Blessing of Unity (Psalm 133)

How very good and pleasant it is
    when kindred live together in unity!
It is like the precious oil on the head,
    running down upon the beard,
on the beard of Aaron,
    running down over the collar of his robes.
It is like the dew of Hermon,
    which falls on the mountains of Zion.
For there the Lord ordained his blessing,
    life forevermore. (New Revised Standard Version)

In the ancient world, the temple in Jerusalem sat at the highest point of the city. In fact, Jerusalem itself sits relatively high in its geographic region – about 2,500 feet above sea level. A person walking literally goes up to Jerusalem, and up even higher to the temple mount. It was here, at the highest point, that the worship of God happened.

And as the worshipers made their pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and then to the temple, they sang the psalms, including today’s psalm, where they anticipated meeting with God. The Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134) all express a joy of coming together in faith to worship Yahweh.

To meet with God is to experience an abundant life and joyous unity. It is to be blessed, having a settled peace in being with God and God’s people.

From the vantage of Christianity, the great high place for Christians is the Easter celebration of Christ’s resurrection. Since Jesus rose from death, he raises us up from unbelief to faith, and from death to eternal life.

Everything for the believer in Jesus flows from this infinite and powerful fount of resurrection grace. And everything unites and galvanizes around the center of the person and work of Christ. Because of the resurrection, believers are united into one spiritual family; we are all brothers and sisters.

It is a very good thing that Christ has united us, and it is a very pleasant thing when we consider one another as kindred and maintain the unity that we have been given. And not only are we joined by the gracious action of God, but today’s psalm calls all people to worship God and be united together.

The abundant blessing of unity with each other is maintained by allowing it to flow. The psalm lets us know that the two liquid elements of oil and dew help us to keep things moving and flowing in the right direction for our sense of family and working together. And when those elements flow from the top of Mount Calvary, the result is a world of blessing.

Oil provides the lubrication for our unity here on this earth. This sort of oil was used to consecrate a priest for service.

Moses poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him, to consecrate him. (Leviticus 8:12, NRSV)

The consecrated oil was special, to be used for the purpose of anointing the priests. It was both expensive and precious, yet God encouraged liberality with it in the consecration ritual. The oil is poured out so lavishly on the priest’s head that it ran down over the beard and onto the collar of the robe.

This was, indeed, symbolic that God is not stingy, but generous; and that unity with both God and others is pleasant, and not an onerous chore. For the Christian, this recalls the Gospel story of Mary liberally pouring out an entire bottle of perfume on Jesus:

Then turning toward the woman, Jesus said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has bathed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment.” (Luke 7:44-46, NRSV) 

The Lord has always been a generous God. And because of Christ’s resurrection, a new life of abundance and generosity is possible. It’s like the dew of Mount Hermon.

Mount Hermon is on the border between Lebanon and Syria

Mount Hermon is well north of the temple mount in Jerusalem. It too, is high up. Mount Hermon  rises to 9,232 feet and is the highest point on the east coast of the Mediterranean Sea. When the snow-capped ridge of the mountain melts, it liberally flows down and feeds the Jordan River, providing life for the valley.

Without Mount Hermon, there would be nothing and no one in the valley, which is why this water source is so important. Just like the oil flowing down Aaron’s beard, so the dew of Mount Hermon flows well beyond the mountain’s peak to provide abundant life. It enables us to come together united as one family in one place together.

Life and unity are not scarce. The resurrection of Christ opened the floodgates of heaven with life-giving grace, instead of death-dealing judgment, as in Noah’s day. Jesus is the wellspring of life who makes us one big family of faith by providing people with living water.

“Those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.” (John 4:14, NRSV)

No longer does life need to be quantified and measured in terms of years of time. Yes, we are mortal. But this will give way to immortality because a resurrected life is an everlasting life – made possible by Jesus.

My prayer and my hope is that our psalm for today will be like a glass of cold water on hot day when you are feeling parched. And this water will keep coming, as much of it as you need. The oil will keep flowing, with as much love and grace as you need for today. And there will be plenty more when tomorrow comes. It never runs out.

Perhaps you are encouraged with your own faith walk, but are awfully discouraged with the lack of unity in your family, neighborhood, church, workplace, nation, and world. Unity is not a piece of pie in which some get only a sliver, if any at all. In reality, there is plenty to go around. The power of the resurrection has made it possible.

In this present evil age, there are times of angry conflict and emotional distress, along with periods of great separation and sorrow. People everywhere who are divided and estranged from one another can hear God’s call to live together in unity. It is a call of love which beckons us to participate in the generous overflowing love of the Savior who has paved the way for an abundant life by bringing people together in faith.

Jesus prayed, “Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.” (John 17:11)

A Spiritual Check-Up (2 Corinthians 13:5-10)

Examine yourselves to see if your faith is genuine. Test yourselves. Surely you know that Jesus Christ is among you; if not, you have failed the test of genuine faith. As you test yourselves, I hope you will recognize that we have not failed the test of apostolic authority.

We pray to God that you will not do what is wrong by refusing our correction. I hope we won’t need to demonstrate our authority when we arrive. Do the right thing before we come—even if that makes it look like we have failed to demonstrate our authority. For we cannot oppose the truth, but must always stand for the truth. We are glad to seem weak if it helps show that you are actually strong. We pray that you will become mature.

I am writing this to you before I come, hoping that I won’t need to deal severely with you when I do come. For I want to use the authority the Lord has given me to strengthen you, not to tear you down. (New Living Translation)

God is concerned about our spiritual health and vitality. And so, it’s important that we have regular spiritual check-ups and tests to evaluate the vitality of our faith. If we are spiritually sick or debilitated, the Lord seeks to restore us back to health.

In the Gospels, whenever Jesus miraculously healed a person, it was for far more than taking away a disease or correcting a disability. The Lord sought to make them well in order to restore a person’s life by including them in the community. For example:

  • Leprosy put a person on the outside, both literally and relationally. Ceasing to be a leper meant that a person now had no obstacles to full participation in communal life.
  • Blindness reduced a person to being a beggar in order to survive. Having sight restored meant that the person can now work with others, make a living, and contribute to the needs of others.
  • Incarceration was (and still is) a complete removal of a person from society. Being in prison severs many human connections. Release from jail opens the way to reconnection and an opportunity to have a different way of being with others.
  • Poverty encumbers a person and weighs them down so heavily that it limits their ability to function socially and relationally. Without poverty, a person is able to establish healthy patterns of giving and receiving within the community.

Those who are physically whole, mentally sharp, emotionally satisfied, and spiritually redeemed are free of obstacles and impediments to communal life.

So, it is a travesty whenever the people who enjoy full inclusion in the community, turn around and separate themselves, keeping relational distance from certain persons, and do not participate in the common good of all. They makes themselves sick and weaken their faith because of their lifestyle.

The type of spiritual examination of faith the Apostle Paul was talking about was not to obsess over whether one is a true believer, or not. He was referring to the person who claims faith yet maintains separation from others. In other words, to exclude others is the kind of behavior that unbelievers do, not Christians.

Yet, there are many sections of Christianity and entire Protestant denominations who pride themselves on such separation. They believe they’re being holy and keeping themselves from impurity. However, far too many of them are really putting a sanctified spin on their own sinful predilections to avoid people they don’t like.

Paul has no tolerance for calling exclusion of others “holiness” and naming the maintenance of an insider/outsider status as “sanctification.” The Apostle knew this was all poppycock and wanted nothing to do with it.

Christ didn’t die on a cruel cross, take away the obstacles to faith, open the way to know God, and create peace through his blood for a pack of so-called “Christians” to then erect imaginary concrete border walls to keep others out of Christian community and fellowship.

In God’s upside-down kingdom, the privileged insiders are really the outsiders; and the underprivileged outsiders are actually the insiders.

The privileged believers are just as sick as the leper, the blind, the poor, and the prisoner; and just as much in need of restoration. The path to their inclusion is solidarity with the entire community of the redeemed – rather than picking and choosing who is in and who is out.

All this, of course, is another way of stating that Christianity is as beset with cliques as anywhere else – with individual believers, local churches, and particular traditions following their pet theologians and pastors and not associating with others who follow a different set of folks.

The ancient Corinthian church was a train wreck of opposing groups and cliques. The Apostle Paul had had enough of it and called the people to do some serious self-examination. And he was careful not to degrade or discourage them but to try and encourage the church to tap into the Christ which dwells within them.

Spiritual health and restoration, for Paul, meant specific behaviors which intentionally include people. To be inclusive means we actively work toward grafting people into community, as well as discourage behaviors that create division, and thus, spiritual illness. Here are three ways of including others:

  • Practice hospitality. The word hospitality literally means, “love of stranger.” A hospitable believer goes out of their way to invite another into their life, to give them the gift of relationship and fellowship.

Take care of God’s needy people and welcome strangers into your home. (Romans 12:13, CEV)

Above all, show sincere love to each other, because love brings about the forgiveness of many sins. Open your homes to each other without complaining. And serve each other according to the gift each person has received, as good managers of God’s diverse gifts. (1 Peter 4:8-10, CEB)

  • Nip bitterness in the bud. In an ideal world, everyone holds hands and sings kumbaya together. We live, however, in a fallen world. Harmony, unity, and peace take copious amounts of energy. Like an attentive gardener, we must do the work of identifying weeds and uprooting them, so they don’t take over the garden.

Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. (Hebrews 12:14-15, NIV)

  • Seek to encourage others, and learn how to do it. Encouragement is both a gift and a skill to be developed. To encourage another is to come alongside and help someone with both affirming words and willing hands. It’s what Jesus did (and does) for us.

Christ died for us so that, whether we are dead or alive when he returns, we can live with him forever. So, encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing. (1 Thessalonians 5:10-11, NLT)

Hospitality, harmony, and help are all forms of love. And love is to be the guiding principle and practice of church and community. Love is always the prescription for a healthy spiritual life and a restored community of faith. It prevents truth decay.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.

Dealing with Opposing Views (Romans 14:1-12)

Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. One person’s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them. Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand.

One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God; and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone. If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.

You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. It is written:

“‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord,
‘every knee will bow before me;
    every tongue will acknowledge God.’”

So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God. (New International Version)

Within the church at Rome were Jewish believers who had come to faith in Christ from their background steeped in the Old Testament. They had a rich two-thousand year history of a covenant with God that included ritual food laws, the keeping of certain feast days, and observing a calendar of events, especially the Sabbath.

Also within the Roman church were Gentiles (non-Jewish people) having come to faith in Christ from a background of paganism. They had no history with the God of the Bible. There were no previous generations of faithful believers in God. They were first generation Christians and basked in their newfound freedom.

The Apostle Paul’s vision was for one church, unified together around Jesus. And this unity would need to be worked on. Jew and Gentile were very different from one another; and here they were in the same church together, not understanding each other. 

The Jewish believers were appalled at Gentile thinking and behavior. Even though the Jewish Christians had come to embrace Jesus, they did not abandon their two-thousand year history of being with God. They still held to their food laws and special days. The Jewish members believed the Gentiles should be like them; the Jews wanted the Gentiles to embrace the same ritualistic behavior that they had done for centuries.

But the Gentiles did not comply. So, the Jewish believers passed judgment and condemnation on them for not being sensitive to the things of God.

On the other hand, the Gentile believers felt no compulsion to have such rules and regulations concerning their Christian lives. They ate what they pleased and saw no need to hold to special days. They could not understand why the Jewish Christians were so stuck in their traditions. So the Gentiles looked down on the Jews as hopelessly misguided. This was a potentially explosive situation that Paul was deeply concerned about.

The Apostle Paul’s message was to accept the person whose faith is weak without passing judgment on disputable matters. Sounds like easy counsel to follow. But the problem was that the people did not distinguish between what is a non-negotiable matter and what was a disputable matter. 

The guiding principle is that Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living. The non-negotiable matter is Jesus Christ, his person and work.  Jesus is our core belief. Nothing else is to be in the center except him.

Therefore, we are to celebrate our unity around Jesus, our center. Anything outside of that center is a “disputable matter” and not worthy of Christians condemning each other or looking down on one another.

The root problem of any church conflict is the de-throning of Jesus and setting up our particular views as the center of Christianity.

The church has struggled with this teaching for its long two-thousand year history. Every church I have served had their particular issues that they felt so strongly about that it crowded Jesus out of the center. 

In one church, education was the big issue. Some believed in Christian schools as the only way to educate their kids. Others felt that home-schooling was the way to go because of the culture. Yet others thought public education needed the light of Christians participating in it, and sent their kids to public schools. The problem was that each group sincerely believed they were right and everyone else was wrong.

In another church I served, there were hard feelings about the place of men and women in the church who had been divorced and remarried. In yet another church, the issue was about whether church members could drink alcohol or not. And yet another church’s issue dealt with how we dress and what our attire is at church. 

I still remember one lady in that church talking with a woman who had recently given her life to Christ out of a life of prostitution. The woman was wearing jeans and a t-shirt. The church lady was giving her a lecture about how she should be “dressing up for Jesus.” As I heard this, I thought to myself, “Lady, I’m not sure you are going to like the woman’s idea of dressing up for Jesus….”

Whenever we want to place disputable matters on people’s “must-do” list, then there will be trouble. We will judge others who do not think as we think, and do as we do, because of the mistaken notion that our way is equal to the death and resurrection of Christ. If it isn’t done my way, the church will be lost.

We do not necessarily need to change our views on disputable matters; but we do need to change our attitude and our behavior toward those we disagree with.

Intolerance of others’ views and behaviors causes a lack of dialogue, to create special interest groups and cabals against others, to stereotype others, and to seek to get their way no matter what. Such intolerance moves church members from a concern for the Great Commission of Jesus to the Great Commode of Satan’s bathroom.

For the Apostle Paul, the issues that divide Christians are very important, not because he championed one over the other, but because the church’s identity was at stake. Paul was concerned for two questions:

  1. Will the church be, at its core, a community of redeemed persons by the grace of God who center all their lives around the person and work of Jesus?
  2. Or will the church be a community of opinionated individuals and groups all jockeying for position to have their way on how they believe things should go?

This is really a heart issue: humility versus pride, and gentleness versus stubbornness. You can tell what a person’s identity is by their “identity markers.”

For the Jewish Christians, Sabbath-keeping, circumcision, food laws, and holding to certain days on the calendar marked their identity as God’s people. Those issues were so important that if you took them away, there would be an identity crisis; the people felt totally lost without their traditions.

For Gentile Christians, their identity was built around being more free-thinking. So, if you take away their freedom and ability to choose, the Gentiles will go nuts and have an identity meltdown. 

Paul’s answer was for both Jew and Gentile to accept each other and build their unity around Jesus, period. They needed to be sensitive to one another and focus on their shared identity of Jesus as the center of the Christian life.

Both the church and the society need some civility. In a nation where we feel free to say whatever we want, we do. In doing so, we elevate self-expression and our opinions over self-control and the mission of the church.

We need some generous spaciousness which allows room for us to discuss issues and disputable matters in an atmosphere of generosity, hospitality, and acceptance, seeking to first listen and understand, before responding. 

The goal of the Christian is not to win an argument or have our way, but to uphold Jesus as Lord of everything and maintain our center in him. On that basis alone, we will be held accountable by God. So, let us live wisely and well, knowing and pursuing Jesus with heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Gracious God, it’s both settling and centering to focus on the assurance of your acceptance. You know everything about us, and despite our failures, fickleness, foolishness, and faithlessness, yet still we are fully and eternally accepted. As you have accepted us, help us to accept others. Grant us grace to love those whom we disagree with.

Merciful and mighty God, enlarge our hearts. Enable us to show kindness without compromising our convictions. Teach us the difference between essential and non-essential matters. Free us from the limitations of our individual perspectives, the prejudices of our heritage, the insecurities of our comfort zone, insincere niceness,and the need to be right. 

Blessed Holy Spirit, burn your holy Word indelibly into us so that we accept all things and everyone you give us, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
