Integrity In All Things (Proverbs 11:3-13)

Integrity guides the virtuous,
    but dishonesty ruins the treacherous.
Riches don’t help in the day of wrath,
    but righteousness rescues from death.
The righteousness of the innocent makes their path straight,
    but the wicked fall in their wickedness.
Those who do right are saved by their righteousness,
    but the untrustworthy are caught by their own desires.
When the wicked die, their hope perishes.
    Yes, any hope based on money perishes.
The righteous are saved from distress,
    and the wicked take their place.
The godless destroy their neighbors by their words,
    but the righteous are saved by their knowledge.
When the righteous succeed, a city rejoices;
    when the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy.
A city is honored by the blessing of the virtuous;
    it is destroyed by the words of the wicked.
Whoever despises their neighbor lacks sense;
    a sensible person keeps quiet.
A slanderer walks around revealing secrets,
    but a trustworthy person keeps a confidence. (Common English Bible)

Integrity appears to be in short supply these days. No matter whether it’s a church, a corporation, an institution, organization, or governmental administration, it only takes one person in authority who is without integrity to ruin the whole enterprise.

This is why it is so important to never normalize bad behavior and bad speech. It will do no good to simply say, “Well, that’s just the way he is.” Everyone, no matter who they are, must be held accountable for their words and actions. And if we choose to let the unvirtuous person continue in their lack of integrity, then we ourselves become complicit in their unjust activity.

What the unrighteous person fails to realize, is that watching out for number one and taking advantage of others will eventually come back to bite them. The unscrupulous rich person will lose their wealth. The unjust person will come face to face with what their injustice has done. The slanderous person shall be unmasked and seen by all for what they truly are.

The Teacher of Proverbs informs us that evildoers will suffer in their wickedness; whereas the righteous shall be rewarded. Everyone eventually receives what they deserve – whether it’s the righteous or the wicked.

This sort of karmic sense of justice happens both in this life and the life to come. Those who do and say whatever they want, without any integrity, undergo a double-suffering: They’re tormented now in the present, and likely into the future; that is, unless they undergo some Scrooge-like transformation.

The suffering of the wicked is caused by their own stupid foolish choices without any direct intervention by God. God’s law, much like the natural law of gravity, has consequences if you choose to disrespect it. In that sense, the wicked also suffer divine condemnation.

The Lord favors good people,
    but he condemns schemers. (Proverbs 12:2, CEB)

Even though the wicked prosper, by no means is it permanent. And although the righteous are deeply disturbed and troubled by the constant lies and evil machinations of wicked persons, they shall realize a world that is just, right, and good. Injustice and unrighteousness are temporary.

The evil person will surely not go unpunished,
    but the children of the righteous will escape. (Proverbs 11:21, CEB)

It may drive us batty to see that evil is having its way, and that the wicked are doing quite nicely for themselves, but the Teacher seeks to comfort the righteous with the reality that it will not always be this way.

Stolen bread is sweet,
    but afterward the mouth is full of gravel. (Proverbs 20:17, CEB)

We know we’re living in an upside-down messed-up world because the righteous too often suffer and the wicked too often prosper. But it won’t last.

It’s important we remain honest and above board – no matter the circumstances. Whether its in business dealings, leadership, family relations, community involvement, or political activity, its imperative to be a person of integrity without any hint of duplicity.

Dishonesty may get the wicked person where they want to go in the short term, but it has a devastating price to pay. Deals with the devil always do.

Better a little with righteousness
    than great profits without justice. (Proverbs 16:8, CEB)

The Lord is a just God. That means God does more than show justice in all things; justice is a part of God’s very character and makeup. God cannot be unjust because God is Justice with a capital “J.”

Its way above our pay-grade to seek retribution and revenge on another. Exacting judgment belongs to God, and not you nor me.

Don’t say, “I’ll repay the evildoer!”
    Wait for the Lord, and he will save you. (Proverbs 20:22, CEB)

In the past several months, I have largely abandoned social media and electronic conversations with others. There is too much of the godless (cloaked in godly language) destroying their neighbor with their angry words and ignorant misinformation. I don’t want to get sucked into that vortex of ridiculousness. I’ll let the Lord deal with them. I have bigger fish to fry than to get involved in unhelpful and often harmful communication.

I rather choose to focus my time, effort, and words on reminding myself and others of the need for integrity in all things; always remaining prudent; and practicing self-awareness. When Christ returns, I’d like him to find me patiently waiting in quiet trust – instead of spewing a bunch of nasty vitriol that is consistent with Satan, not God.

For me, Proverbs isn’t simply a nice book of the Bible to read. Rather, it is vital knowledge to internalize and learn from. Without the wisdom of Proverbs, I’m undone and adrift. I need these short pity statements of experiential truth to help me understand how to talk and act in this fallen world.

This is why its important to read Proverbs slowly, carefully, prayerfully; to meditate upon these wise statements; and to reflect on putting them into practice. Integrity in everything – both speech and action – will serve us well, now and forever.

Wise God, may divine wisdom shape my thoughts, decisions, and actions each day as I seek to live by the Spirit. Lead me into all truth as I submit wise teaching; and to You as my Counselor and Guide; through Christ my Lord. Amen.

The Suffering of Job (Job 6:14-30)

“Those who withhold kindness from a friend
    forsake the fear of the Almighty.
My companions are treacherous like a torrent bed,
    like swollen streams that pass away,
that run dark with ice,
    turbid with melting snow.
In time of heat they disappear;
    when it is hot, they vanish from their place.
The caravans turn aside from their course;
    they go up into the waste and perish.
The caravans of Tema look;
    the travelers of Sheba hope.
They are disappointed because they were confident;
    they come there and are confounded.
Such you have now become to me;
    you see my calamity and are afraid.
Have I said, ‘Make me a gift’?
    Or, ‘From your wealth offer a bribe for me’?
Or, ‘Save me from an opponent’s hand’?
    Or, ‘Ransom me from the hand of oppressors’?

“Teach me, and I will be silent;

    But your reproof, what does it reprove?
Do you think that you can reprove words,
    as if the speech of the desperate were wind?
You would even cast lots over the orphan
    and bargain over your friend.

“But now, be pleased to look at me,
    for I will not lie to your face.
Turn, I pray; let no wrong be done.
    Turn now; my vindication is at stake.
Is there any wrong on my tongue?

There was a time when faith, hope, and love meant something; a time in which neighbor cared for neighbor, basic human kindness was extended to the stranger, and one’s word was more of a bond than a legal document. At least, that’s what the ancient character of Job felt like. And to be honest, I feel like that, too.

Wherever there is suffering, death, and accusations, there you will find behind it all the character we know as Satan. Evil is very much real. And it exists as much today as it did all those millennia ago when Job experienced Satan’s sinister touch of horrible suffering.

Today, we too often interact with each other much like Job’s supposed friends talked to him in a strictly legalistic way. They believed the world operated in a way where the sign of being under God’s blessing was to be wealthy and healthy. And those who were cursed could expect poverty and sickness.

But the world we live in is not so simplistic as that. Good and godly people suffer; whereas the bad use their riches and power to gain more riches and power for themselves. Satan is alive and well. He lives just down the street, even next door.

Until we can get a hold of that reality, we will be continually flummoxed about the real nature of the Book of Job in the Bible’s Old Testament. And we will fail to discern that not only was Job a profoundly righteous person, but that in all righteousness he contended with God. What’s more, he was eventually vindicated by God.

Some of the greatest suffering a human can endure is not what can be done to the body, but what affects the soul. To experience the silence of God, and the ignorant chattering of friends, is perhaps the hardest of all sufferings to daily contend with.

Job’s companions were more than unhelpful – they were just as harmful as the physical machinations of Satan. And if you can accept it, the companions themselves were mere tools of the evil one. It’s a scary thought, but one we must face.

Although Job was cursed with terrible pain of both body and soul, he never gave a curse back to his companions; and he never chose to curse God and die. You see, Job understood, more than most of us today, that it is diabolical and demonic to return curse for curse.

Nowhere in Holy Scripture will you find that God desires someone who has been struck on the cheek to strike the other back with so much force that they won’t ever do it again. Payback and retaliation may be the way of the world, but it is not the way of God’s everlasting kingdom. And Job knew it.

Job’s friends did not see the reality about his calamity. That’s probably because they just couldn’t admit the truth of it. Their self and spiritual awareness was so small that they stubbornly held to false notions of God, God’s world, and God’s people.

The thing any of us needs from friends and neighbors in a time of crisis is some commitment to helping, not harming. Unfortunately, Job’s friends were of the fair weather type; when the weather’s good, they’re all in; but when the weather’s bad, they emotionally and spiritually distance themselves as far from their friend as they can get.

As a person of integrity, Job never asked his companions to rescue him. He only expected them to stand by him, and not haggle over his worth as a friend. They proved to be false friends who were more harm than help.

The suffering person is in a time of profound disorientation. It’s difficult for them to know which way is up. They don’t need a friend who has all the answers; in fact, someone with all the answers is only annoying. Instead, they need a friend who will come alongside and never forsake them.

In the end, God’s anger didn’t extend to Job but to his so-called friends. Their pride and ignorance was their undoing. What’s more, Job continued to show his integrity by praying for his friends, despite all their emotional harm to him.

You would never find Satan responding in the way of Job.

O God, help me to keep my heart clean and to live so honestly and fearlessly that no outward failure can dishearten me or take away the joy of conscious integrity. Open wide the eyes of my soul that I may see good in all things. Grant me this day some new vision of divine truth; and inspire me with the spirit of joy and gladness. Make me the cup of strength to suffering souls; in the name of the strong Deliverer, our only Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

I Will Yet Again Praise God (Psalms 42 & 43)

    my help and my God.

Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause
    against an ungodly people;
from those who are deceitful and unjust,
    deliver me!
For you are the God in whom I take refuge;
    why have you cast me off?
Why must I walk about mournfully
    because of the oppression of the enemy?

O send out your light and your truth;
    let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy hill
    and to your dwelling.
Then I will go to the altar of God,
    to God my exceeding joy,
and I will praise you with the harp,
    O God, my God.

    and why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God, for I shall again praise him,
    my help and my God. (New Revised Standard Version)

I often get asked why God allows such hard things in our lives. There is likely no complete answer to that question; at least not on this side of heaven. Yet, I believe we can respond to the query in part: Facing hard circumstances, difficulty, and  adversity drives us to seek our help in God.

For those committed to knowing God, the desire for help through hardship becomes a deep longing not just to cope with and transcend troubles, but also to experience God like never before.

Every believer is familiar with becoming forlorn, even with crying themselves to sleep at night because of what is happening in their life. And the experience is further exacerbated by calloused others who mock us for our belief in a divine transcendent being.

Much like Christ on the cross, those who care nothing for us stroll by, see our agony, and respond with a “Humph! Let’s see your ‘God’ save you now!” (Matthew 27:42; Mark 15:31; Luke 23:35)

It’s in such times we remember back, when God felt very near to us, and seemed to answer every prayer. Yet now, the silence of God is palpable. This awkward quietness puts one in a position to hope. And when hope reawakens, a new resolve toward perseverance through the trouble comes.

For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope, for who hopes for what one already sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. (Romans 8:24-25, NRSV)

Somehow, deep in our soul, we know that we will yet praise God again for a great deliverance. We remember that we were helped in the past; and now, in the present, that we will be helped again. Praise arises as an organic response to what we know will happen, even though it hasn’t yet happened.

Fresh prayers come to us, smack in the midst of our adverse situations. We pray, not only for our own help and deliverance, but also for the justice of God to have it’s way in the world.

We think of all the other believers who, like us, are facing hardship for no fault of their own. In a wonderful sense of solidarity in spirit, we lift up our sisters and brothers in the faith before the God for whom we are convinced will help them, as well as us.

All we want to do is somehow maintain our integrity of relationship with God and others, to remain in the cradle of truth – keeping our little light shining in the darkness that surrounds us.

It is not a sin to be troubled and to feel alone in the middle of a stressful and difficult circumstance. What we do with ourselves when we are in such a situation is what makes all the difference.

I suggest we flee to the Book of Psalms. In those times when tears become our food and drink, and we don’t know how to pray, let’s let the psalmist pray for us by adopting his prayers as our very own.

O God, our refuge and hope: When despondency and despair haunt and afflict us, comfort us with the stillness of your divine presence, so that we might confess all you have done, through Christ to whom we belong and in whom we are one. Amen.

Our Help Is In the Name of the Lord (Psalm 124)

If it had not been the Lord who was on our side
    —let Israel now say—
if it had not been the Lord who was on our side,
    when our enemies attacked us,
then they would have swallowed us up alive,
    when their anger was kindled against us;
then the flood would have swept us away;
    the torrent would have gone over us;
then over us would have gone
    the raging waters.

Blessed be the Lord,
    who has not given us
    as prey to their teeth.
We have escaped like a bird
    from the snare of the hunters;
the snare is broken,
    and we have escaped.

Our help is in the name of the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth. (New Revised Standard Version)

Today’s Psalm reminds believers of God’s deliverance in the past, so that we will not forget it in the present. If it were not for God, we would be toast. If not for God, none of us would be here; we’d be swallowed up by injustice and death.

Left on our own, and to our own devices, we don’t stand a chance against the oppressive flood of sinful sewage. But with God, there is hope; with God there is deliverance.

The ancient Israelites – and all the Jewish people throughout history – know a great deal of what it feels like to be overwhelmed by their enemies. Antisemitism is nothing new. Unfortunately, it has been around as long as Jews have existed. If some groups had their way, Israel would be wiped off the map.

The psalmist reminds Israel, as well as all of God’s people, of what the Lord has done in the past. Exhibit A of divine deliverance is the Exodus event and passing through the Red Sea to safety. The mighty Egyptians were no match for the God of Israel.

Each year, ever since that seminal deliverance from Israel’s enemies, Jews celebrate Passover, remembering and rehearsing this event of deliverance from the hand of Pharaoh. As pilgrims made their way to Jerusalem for the great Passover feast, they would sing Psalm 124, along with the other Songs of Ascent, giving praise to God for being attentive to their plight of slavery and oppression.

It is more than appropriate to give thanks and bless the Lord for the divine work of deliverance from enemies. God’s people are freed. For the Christian, God in Christ has delivered us from sin, death, and hell; and has made us joint heirs with Jesus.

When this perishable body puts on imperishability and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will be fulfilled:

“Death has been swallowed up in victory.”
“Where, O death, is your victory?
    Where, O death, is your sting?”

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, my beloved brothers and sisters, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:54-58, NRSV)

Recalling what God has done for us is a powerful part of the believer’s identity. The very Maker of heaven and earth, the Lord God almighty, is our help. It is God who prevails against those who seek to destroy and do harm. The Lord is the One who conquers enemies and makes things right.

The believer puts no trust in the power of weapons or in being the strongest. God is acknowledged as the true Deliverer from even the most formidable of foes, despite any power of the unjust.

In Christianity, Christ’s redemptive events of cross and resurrection has triumphed and won the victory over the powerful enemies of death, destruction, and the devil. Praising and singing to God is helpful and needed.

We all need help – not just sometimes but all the time. If we feel as if things are going pretty well for us, that only means we have just come out of a difficult time, or that we are about to undergo some enemy vitriol.

I wish we didn’t have to contend with selfish boneheads who only think of themselves all the time. But we do. And I wish we never needed to go through such hard times that grind us into the ground. Yet it happens.

However, we are not alone. We have a Champion, an Advocate, and One who has gone before us as the Pioneer of our salvation.

He has raised up a mighty savior for us
    in the house of his child David,
as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,
    that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us. (Luke 1:69-71, NRSV)

Jesus did for us what we could do for ourselves. He willingly and deliberately let all evil exhaust itself on him, so that there is no enemy left to condemn us.

Enemies may still be around, but they are toothless. We may yet be like birds vulnerable to a trap, but the snare has been broken. All our enemies are powerless. We are free. Thanks be to God!

Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth. Amen.
