The Way of Love (Song of Songs 3:1-11)

Eastertide is a celebration of new life through exploring the implications of living a resurrected life. A significant dimension to that life is a new awakening and awareness of love. Being raised to a new life of love means that we can dispense with old ways of looking at love that were unhealthy for us.

King Solomon’s Song of Songs has been viewed throughout the history of biblical interpretation in various ways. It’s been seen as a celebration of sexual love between a man and a woman. Others view the Song as a description of the mutual love between God and Israel or Christ and the Church.

With whatever approach we examine this unique book of Holy Scripture, I believe it’s helpful for us to avoid looking at it too literally, as if it were a sex manual for spiritually minded newlyweds.

For most of church history, the book has been viewed allegorically and metaphorically, not literally. So, it seems to me, this warrants the interpreter to walk mindfully and wisely through its wonderful prose, and not like some arrogant and supposed Romeo who believes they are God’s gift to scripture interpretation.

The Song of Songs, at its heart, is really an ode to Love itself. Love is the force that binds us together as humans, and comes from the One who is pure Love. As such, Love is perhaps the most potent strength in the universe. Thus, Love needs to be respected. Love must be handled with care, because its power can harm us if we are careless with it.

Longing for love is a universally understood feeling. The need for love is so great that the woman in today’s Old Testament lesson will put herself at considerable risk in order to seek and find her beloved in the middle of the night on the city streets.

“You have to keep breaking your heart until it opens.”

Love, however, is not to be awakened before its proper time. Certainly, to love is to risk, for we choose to put ourselves out there for the sake of giving and receiving love. Yet, there are to be limits on that pursuit. Seeking love can put one in a hazardous situation. It’s best, therefore, to allow some patience with love, to not rouse love with blind desire.

Love will have its way; we need not force it before its true readiness.

The woman longs for her beloved. The pain of separation is almost too much for her to bear. Love hurts. There is, however, good pain and bad pain. The pain of waiting and wondering has a purpose which we need to submit to, and follow. It is an opportunity for careful reflection, mindful contemplation, and healthy introspection.

Without these spiritual disciplines, the problem of fear arises – not love – and begins to gnaw at us, that perhaps we are unloved. Thoughts and feelings of insecurity can creep in and dog us with incessant and obnoxious barking.

But we must trust in Love. Love cannot be domesticated, nor fully defined, and that is a good thing – because Love is much bigger than any of us. And it’s also good that we cannot precisely interpret nor explain all of the contents within the Song of Songs. The book is a good reminder that Holy Scripture stands above us, and not the other way around.

God is Love. And Love is God. True human love serves as a symbol of divine love. We not so much come to understand the ways of God and Love, as we discover it, describe it, and then determine to live it.

People never fully connect to God, at least this side of heaven, in much the same way as the desired rendezvous of the lovers in the Song never explicitly occurs. The God we seek is the God who corresponds to our needs and desires, our loves and our fears.

And yet, God is also wholly other than us; God is revealed to humanity by means of Scripture. God issues decrees and commands that may not seem as if they sync with our perceived needs. From this perspective, people must obey, regardless of any feeling.

God is, therefore, both approachable to us and completely apart from us, at the same time, all the time. God engages with us in intimate personal spiritual experiences; and God also reaches out through Scripture in human/divine encounters. Both ways are approaches of love, initiated by the One who loves us.

No matter what the question is, Love is always the answer. This is the way.

Creator God, by the mercies of your son, our Lord, Jesus, compel us to turn our hearts to the way of Love, so that we may follow Christ as your faithful people. Guide us, we pray, to Love. Amen.

Share Your Story (Psalm 107:1-16)

O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
    for his steadfast love endures forever.
Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
    those he redeemed from trouble
and gathered in from the lands,
    from the east and from the west,
    from the north and from the south.

Some wandered in desert wastes,
    finding no way to an inhabited town;
hungry and thirsty,
    their soul fainted within them.
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress;
he led them by a straight way,
    until they reached an inhabited town.
Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,

For he satisfies the thirsty,

Every person of faith has a story, a testimony of God’s redeeming, saving, and loving deliverance from trouble. And each one of those stories is sacred and special; no one story is better or greater than another. There’s no need, therefore, to act like you’re taking a course in comparative storytelling – as if you don’t have nearly the spiritual testimony of someone else.

The fact of the matter is that there is no trouble like your own personal trouble. Although others can relate to elements of each of our stories, no one else knows what your own experience is like. The old black spiritual is right in saying. “Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen. Nobody knows but Jesus.”

It’s important to have others empathize with us and help normalize the experience we are going through. It’s necessary to have another validate our emotions and affirm the feelings we’re feeling. And, even after that, there’s nothing quite like a compassionate and caring Being who intimately knows everything about your trouble, how you experience it, and steps-in according to perfect divine timing, to bring uplift, hope, and salvation.

There is such a Being. God. Yahweh. The Lord. Pure Goodness. Redeemer. Savior. And most of all, Lover who is infinite Love with a capital “L.”

Why am I so confident about such a Being as this? Did I take too much methadone? Am I only an old fart who still believes in God? Or perhaps, you think, I’m a weird sort of giddy about God because of the Bible. Well, yes, and no. Scripture – especially the Psalms – just happens to put into words my actual experience and emotions.

But I don’t much care about parsing out whether I’m a deluded metaphysician or a sappy magpie or whatever other label gets affixed to me. It just doesn’t matter – because every epistemic fiber of my lower case being resonates with the upper case Being who bestows steadfast love because that Being’s character is actually made up of Love. It’s as if God is the biggest ultimate Teddy Bear, stuffed with holy love for all creation.

And, what’s more, this God seems to specialize and enjoy paying attention to the least, the lost, and the lowly among us humans. I was once in such a deep, dark, dank, black hole of spiritual nothingness that I knew I could never get out of, that is, on my own. I needed deliverance, or there wouldn’t be any hope whatsoever.

Others have experienced something akin to wandering alone out in a desert spiritual wasteland with no water, no food, no nothing but oppressive heat and loneliness. And others have had the trouble of real flesh and blood people seeking to do them harm, both physically and mentally. Yet others felt like they were bereft of options on a plantation of slavery in which all they could do was work like animals just to survive another day.

What all these persons have in common is that they cried out to the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. And most of them didn’t just do it once; some cried out until they had no voice and were too weak to even speak anymore.

God showed up. God also showed off. Not only was there deliverance, but there was also an upgrade. For me, it was not like Tim 2.0, but Tim 1,000.0 – a filling of divine grace that goes beyond mere words. Because of God’s grace and love in my own life, it has enabled me to tap into that storehouse of mercy and pray with spiritual confidence.

When my dear wife had a spine surgery several years ago and awoke from it unable to move her legs, I prayed. I asked for mercy. I pleaded for grace. And I did it for hours at the foot of her hospital bed. I remember that I stubbornly would not accept the fact that she could not move her lower body.  And I decided to stand there and pray until I got an answer from God.

Eventually, I prayed myself asleep. My wife woke me up sometime in the early morning the next day. She told me to pull back the covers and look at her right big toe…. She could give it an ever-small twitch. We called the nurse, who was so excited that she called everyone she could get a hold of.

With a dozen hospital staff huddled around the hospital bed, my wife proceeded to give that big toe a hearty move. The staff erupted with clapping, and I am not kidding when I say that we had a party with noise and shouts in a hospital room at 4am. Nobody cared we were going nuts. I certainly did not.

My friend, God is still in the business of answering prayer, of showing up and showing off.

Through the hard times, the good times, and the confusing times, the Lord is our constant ballast for all seasons of life, whether good or bad. And I love God for that abiding presence. I can also give testimony that through all of the adverse situations my wife and I have faced, we have learned to stop, be still, and find that all we ever wanted we already have, even when everything changes.

Psalm 107 lets us know that personal testimony expressed to the community is an important aspect of strengthening everyone’s faith. Our stories are important, and they are meant to be shared. The spiritual and emotional health of us all is at stake.

Accept, O Lord, our thanks and praise for all that you have done for us. We thank you for the splendor of the whole creation, for the beauty of this world, for the wonder of life, and for the mystery of love.

We thank you for the blessing of family and friends, and for the loving care which surrounds us on very side.

We thank you for setting us at tasks which demand our best efforts, and for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy and delight us.

We thank you also for the disappointments and failures that lead us to acknowledge our dependence on you alone.

Above all, we thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the truth of his Word and the example of his life; for his steadfast obedience, by which he overcame temptation; for his dying, through which he overcame death; and for his rising to life again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom.

Grant us the gift of your Spirit; that we may know you and make you known; and through your Spirit, at all times and in all places, may give thanks to you in all things. Amen.

Known by God (Psalm 139:13-18)

You are the one
who put me together
    inside my mother’s body,
and I praise you because of
the wonderful way
    you created me.
Everything you do is marvelous!
    Of this I have no doubt.

Nothing about me
    is hidden from you!
I was secretly woven together
    out of human sight,
but with your own eyes you saw
    my body being formed.
Even before I was born,
you had written in your book
    everything about me.

Your thoughts are far beyond
    my understanding,
much more than I
    could ever imagine.
I try to count your thoughts,
but they outnumber the grains
    of sand on the beach.
And when I awake,

We don’t really know God, as much as we are known by God.

And God knows us intimately, down to each individual chromosome in our DNA strand.

For me, the incredible thing about this very detailed knowledge about each one of us is that God still wants to discover even more about us, as well as to be known by us.

Yes, the cosmic Ruler of the universe wants to share in a relationship with you and me – to be known and to know – and delights in the whole process of perceiving us.

Perhaps this is why my highest aspiration in life is to know Christ better. This has been true of me throughout the entirety of my Christian life across the decades. Which is why one of my favorite places in the Bible (which, by the way, is God’s self-revealing knowledge of the divine nature) is from a fellow believer who aims for the same thing:

“Nothing is as wonderful as knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have given up everything else and count it all as garbage. All I want is Christ and to know that I belong to him…. All I want is to know Christ and the power that raised him to life. I want to suffer and die as he did, so that somehow I also may be raised to life.” (Philippians 3:8-11, CEV)

This sort of knowing is much more than intellectual understanding or cerebral information; it’s an experiential knowledge that requires the dialogue and interaction of a lived relationship with another. Love is the glue which bonds this kind of reciprocal knowing of two persons. Sheer learning, without love – which fuels relational discovery – is counterproductive.

“All of us know something…. But knowledge makes us proud of ourselves, while love makes us helpful to others. In fact, people who think they know so much don’t know anything at all. But God has no doubts about who loves him.” (1 Corinthians 8:1-3, CEV)

What we know about ourselves is weird and conflicting. Many of us know we are good persons doing good work in the world. And yet, we also know many of the dark places in our hearts, and this knowledge is a source of shame to us.

This was also true of the psalmist. He knew that he was a bundle of contradictions within a single person. However, he was willing to be vulnerable before God, knowing that the Lord sees him completely for who he is – including all of those shadowy places within.

In fact, God does some of the best divine work in the dark. A masterful weaving of your body and soul was done in the deepest part of your mother’s physical self. Life truly is a hand crafted one-of-a-kind gift, given to us by God.

There are, of course, parts of us we really like – and parts of us we don’t like and maybe even despise – which may cause us to question the goodness and/or care of God by the way we were formed. It’s easy to fixate on what’s wrong, as if we have the right to a particular body. Yet, none of us are owed anything from the Creator.

But, my friend, I ask, “Who do you think you are to question God? Does the clay have the right to ask the potter why he shaped it the way he did? Doesn’t a potter have the right to make a fancy bowl and a plain bowl out of the same lump of clay?” (Romans 9:20-21, CEV)

Today’s psalm suggests to us that each individual human person, you and me, are God’s best work of art. There is no beauty quite like that designed and made by God. Beauty takes our breath away and elicits awe and wonder from us. We are made in the image and likeness of a beautiful God – so beautiful that if we were to actually see God, the sheer beauty would undo us.

God even treasures us at our worst. Although spiritual growth and development is a lifetime project, we don’t engage in it in order for God to take notice and accept us. It isn’t a self-improvement plan. Rather, our spiritual growth is to help us be in a position to know Christ better – just as flower opens to the sun for energy. God delights in spiritually forming us, as well as the creative process in physically making us.

The Lord’s thoughts of us are continual. God is immanently near and close to us. And this is the bedrock foundation of our faith – that we are known by a good God who cares about every hair on our head, or in my case, every molecule of my being.

The psalmist’s God is a God worth getting to know. This is a God who is with us when we fall asleep at night, and who is there when we awake, having kept watch over us throughout the dark after-hours. “I am awake. I’m still with you!” says the Lord as we are greeted for each new day.

So, may you truly know this God who knows you deeply and intimately.

May you come to know and love yourself, just as you are known and loved by God.

And may the grace of Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the abiding encouragement of the Holy Spirit be with you, now and forever. Amen.

The Plan Comes Together (Genesis 24:10-52)

Reading Holy Scripture is important. And the way we read it is significant. For the past several years, I have personally made it a practice to always read from the Bible out loud. There is something deeply powerful and impactful about the experience of reading aloud God’s Word.

I also try and read Scripture carefully and slowly. I deliberately make choices about my tone and inflexion, paying attention to which words are emphasized. I try to communicate as best I can the spirit and intent of the words.

I encourage you today to read aloud (and listen to) today’s Old Testament lesson. Take your time. Read it at your own pace. Notice which words you tend to accent, and what the Spirit may be saying to you in the reading…

Soon after that, the servant loaded ten of Abraham’s camels with valuable gifts. Then he set out for the city in northern Syria, where Abraham’s brother Nahor lived.

When he got there, he let the camels rest near the well outside the city. It was late afternoon, the time when the women came out for water. The servant prayed:

You, Lord, are the God my master Abraham worships. Please keep your promise to him and let me find a wife for Isaac today. The young women of the city will soon come to this well for water, and I’ll ask one of them for a drink. If she gives me a drink and then offers to get some water for my camels, I’ll know she is the one you have chosen and that you have kept your promise to my master.

While he was still praying, a beautiful unmarried young woman came by with a water jar on her shoulder. She was Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Abraham’s brother Nahor and his wife Milcah. Rebekah walked past Abraham’s servant, then went over to the well, and filled her water jar. When she started back, Abraham’s servant ran to her and said, “Please let me have a drink of water.”

“I’ll be glad to,” she answered. Then she quickly took the jar from her shoulder and held it while he drank. After he had finished, she said, “Now I’ll give your camels all the water they want.” She quickly poured out water for them, and she kept going back for more, until his camels had drunk all they wanted. Abraham’s servant did not say a word, but he watched everything Rebekah did, because he wanted to know for certain if this was the woman the Lord had chosen.

The servant had brought along an expensive gold ring and two large gold bracelets. When Rebekah had finished bringing the water, he gave her the ring for her nose and the bracelets for her arms. Then he said, “Please tell me who your father is. Does he have room in his house for me and my men to spend the night?”

She answered, “My father is Bethuel, the son of Nahor and Milcah. We have a place where you and your men can stay, and we also have enough straw and feed for your camels.”

Then the servant bowed his head and prayed, “I thank you, Lord God of my master Abraham! You have led me to his relatives and kept your promise to him.”

Rebekah ran straight home and told her family everything. Her brother Laban heard her tell what the servant had said, and he saw the ring and the bracelets she was wearing. So Laban ran out to Abraham’s servant, who was standing by his camels at the well. Then Laban said, “The Lord has brought you safely here. Come home with me. There’s no need for you to keep on standing outside. I have a room ready for you in our house, and there’s also a place for your camels.”

Abraham’s servant went home with Laban, where Laban’s servants unloaded his camels and gave them straw and feed. Then they brought water into the house, so Abraham’s servant and his men could wash their feet. After that, they brought in food. But the servant said, “Before I eat, I must tell you why I have come.”

“Go ahead and tell us,” Laban answered.

The servant explained:

I am Abraham’s servant. The Lord has been good to my master and has made him very rich. He has given him many sheep, goats, cattle, camels, and donkeys, as well as a lot of silver and gold, and many slaves. Sarah, my master’s wife, didn’t have any children until she was very old. Then she had a son, and my master has given him everything. I solemnly promised my master that I would do what he said. And he told me, “Don’t choose a wife for my son from the women in this land of Canaan. Instead, go back to the land where I was born and find a wife for my son from among my relatives.”

I asked my master, “What if the young woman refuses to come with me?”

My master answered, “I have always obeyed the Lord, and he will send his angel to help you find my son a wife from among my own relatives. But if they refuse to let her come back with you, then you are freed from your promise.”

When I came to the well today, I silently prayed, “You, Lord, are the God my master Abraham worships, so please lead me to a wife for his son while I am here at the well. When a young woman comes out to get water, I’ll ask her to give me a drink. If she gives me a drink and offers to get some water for my camels, I’ll know she is the one you have chosen.”

Even before I had finished praying, Rebekah came by with a water jar on her shoulder. When she had filled the jar, I asked her for a drink. She quickly lowered the jar from her shoulder and said, “Have a drink. Then I’ll get water for your camels.” So I drank, and after that she got some water for my camels. I asked her who her father was, and she answered, “My father is Bethuel the son of Nahor and Milcah.” At once I put the ring in her nose and the bracelets on her arms. Then I bowed my head and gave thanks to the God my master Abraham worships. The Lord had led me straight to my master’s relatives, and I had found a wife for his son.

Now please tell me if you are willing to do the right thing for my master. Will you treat him fairly, or do I have to look for another young woman?

Laban and Bethuel answered, “The Lord has done this. We have no choice in the matter. Take Rebekah with you; she can marry your master’s son, just as the Lord has said.” Abraham’s servant bowed down and thanked the Lord. (Contemporary English Version)
