Psalm 86

What is your view of God?  For some, God is up there, somewhere, like some white-bearded old guy who is aloof to what is going on down here – there is neither anything personal nor personable about him, at all.  For others, God is a force which binds all things together; he’s there, but you’re never quite sure how to get in touch with him – it’s like a crap shoot trying to connect with him.  For yet others, God is perpetually perturbed about something; he’s got a bee in his bonnet and its our job to figure out what he’s sullen and upset about all the time so that we might appease him in some way.
But the psalmist, David, sees God in wholly other ways than this.  For David, God is personal, knowable, and very reachable.  Reading this psalm tells us a great deal of how David thought about God.  Notice what we learn about God from the way David describes him: “You willingly forgive,” “your love is always there,” “you listen,” “you perform great wonders,” “you protect me,” “you are kind and merciful,” you don’t easily get angry,” and “you help and comfort me.”
Now this is a God you can sink your teeth into.  He’s attentive, engaged, and anything but upset all the time.  This is the reason why David has no problem asking God to: “please listen and answer my prayer,” “save me,” “make my heart glad,” and “teach me to follow you.”  With this God, David willingly states without being coerced: “I will serve you.”
If your view of God cannot support and bear the weight of your life’s hardest circumstances, then you need a different view of God! I invite you to see the God of David.  This God has the ability within himself to satisfy your life’s greatest needs.

Great God of David, you are above all things and beside all things and with all things.  You are uniquely positioned and powerful to walk with me through all the situations of my life.  Thank you for sending the Son of David to make real your promises to me.  Amen.

Psalm 139:1-6

How do you talk to yourself?  You know what I mean.  The kind of speech that goes on inside your head.  The things which you say inside your heart that no one knows but you.  I think you will agree with me that you are rather hard on yourself.  In the reclusive parts of your mind, you speak to yourself in ways that you would never say to others, nor tolerate others saying about someone else.  Only you know the depth of your own sorrows, hurts, fears, insecurities, and worries.  Except….
God.  He knows it all.  He knows it all intimately.  And He is not repulsed.  You see, God knows that the answer to all the doubts about yourself is His protection.  You have the freedom to plumb the recesses of your heart and soul – to bring out all that is inside the cluttered closet of your mind and lay it out on the floor without fear of God calling you what you call yourself.
Slowly read out loud these verses for today several times.  Allow the protecting God to wash over you with grace and understanding.
139 You have looked deep
into my heart, Lord,
and you know all about me.
You know when I am resting
or when I am working,
and from heaven
you discover my thoughts.
You notice everything I do
and everywhere I go.
Before I even speak a word,
you know what I will say,
and with your powerful arm
you protect me
from every side.
I can’t understand all of this!
Such wonderful knowledge
is far above me. (CEV)

Amen.

Psalm 69:1-5, 30-36

As the church’s and the Christian’s prayer book, the psalms offer a way to come to God when our feelings and emotions have us not knowing how to pray at all.  If you are depressed because of people who would like to see you fail or are out to get you, then this is the psalm for you to pray!
Save me, God!
I am about to drown.
I am sinking deep in the mud,
and my feet are slipping.
I am about to be swept under
by a mighty flood.
I am worn out from crying,
and my throat is dry.
I have waited for you
till my eyes are blurred.
There are more people
who hate me for no reason
than there are hairs
on my head.
Many terrible enemies
want to destroy me, God.
Am I supposed to give back
something I didn’t steal?

When you are voiceless, the psalter can voice it for you.  When you are unable to put your thoughts into words, the Scripture can word it for you.  Two of the great attributes of God is that He is powerful and loving, which means God is more than able to do something about your situation, and it will always be in a loving way.  Know that today He hears you and He is working on a response to your lament lifted to Him – even if it isn’t in your own words.  And I want you to think the thought that He hears you, especially if it is not in your own words, but in the words of Holy Scripture.
God will come through in His own good time.  But that doesn’t mean you cannot praise Him right now in your dilemma.  David chose to praise God, even though he didn’t get an immediate answer to his prayers.  Perhaps God is more concerned to change you and I first, before he chooses to change your circumstance.  So, let this be your decision right now:

I will praise the Lord God
with a song
and a thankful heart.
This will please the Lord
better than offering….

Psalm 121

This is likely my favorite psalm.  I have read it so many times and mulled it over that it is almost second nature for me to draw from its rich theological statement of God when times are difficult.  This is a psalm meant for worship.  In other words, it is designed to be used by God’s people – to be sung, quoted together, and prayed.  A church without Psalm 121 always near to it is a church in danger.  But with it, there is a continual sense of security, confidence, and hope.  Well, enough of my comment.  Let this Contemporary English Version of Psalm 121 wash over you and grace you with God’s abundant mercy:

I look to the hills!
Where will I find help?
It will come from the Lord,
who created the heavens
and the earth.
The Lord is your protector,
and he won’t go to sleep
or let you stumble.
The protector of Israel
doesn’t doze
or ever get drowsy.
The Lord is your protector,
there at your right side
to shade you from the sun.
You won’t be harmed
by the sun during the day
or by the moon at night.

The Lord will protect you
and keep you safe
from all dangers.
The Lord will protect you
now and always
wherever you go.

Amen!
