Divine Judgment and Human Judgmentalism (Luke 21:20-24)

“When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. Then those in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those inside the city must leave it, and those out in the country must not enter it, for these are days of vengeance, as a fulfillment of all that is written. Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress on the earth and wrath against this people; they will fall by the edge of the sword and be taken away as captives among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled on by the nations, until the times of the nations are fulfilled. Judgment is coming… and is already here…

To be more specific, God’s judgment is coming; and humanity’s judgmentalism is already here.

Because of our judgmental spirits, we ought not be surprised that the judgment of God will be here soon.

I cannot get through a day – barely an hour – without hearing judgmental statements coming from another’s mouth. And sometimes, it’s my own mouth.

Judgmentalism is rife. It’s everywhere. And there’s no way to escape it. In a “normal” day (if there is such a thing for me) I hear all sorts of statements, without even trying to hear them. And when I do, I usually have a thought about it (in the parentheses):

  • “They did it because they don’t care about anything.” (And you don’t seem to give a rat’s rear end about understanding why they did it.)
  • “They deserved all the bad stuff they received.” (And you don’t?)
  • “The only reason they got the job to begin with is because of their connections.” (I didn’t realize that you are all-seeing, like God)
  • “You don’t know what you’re talking about!” (Maybe, but neither do you.)
  • “The rain is terrible.” (That’s your assessment. But it isn’t the local farmer’s assessment of the rain. He thinks it’s wonderful.)

Judgmentalism is the tendency to make quick and excessively critical judgments of others, especially moral judgments which characterize another’s thinking or way of being as immoral, unethical, monstrous, and/or harmful.

Our human judgmentalism of one another tends to detract from the sort of judgment we ought to be paying attention to.

Ultimately, none of us sits as Judge to arbitrate what who deserves punishment, or not. That is the job of Judge Jesus. So, when the true judge speaks, it behooves us to listen and follow through with what he (Christ) says about upcoming divine judgment.

When Jesus said his words of Jerusalem’s impending destruction, he was making it clear that these would be days of God’s vengeance, of divine judgment against the people. It would not last forever, because the wrath of God never does.

Yet, judgment is imminent. God will not let times of injustice, unrighteousness, and hatred last without end.

Therefore, Jesus was warning his disciples, and all who would follow him, about how they are to live while they await the end of all things.

We are not to be led astray, and be fooled by anyone who claims the name of Christ, yet lives like a devil. Unfortunately, some will foolishly succumb to falsehood. Everyone will suffer in some way.

Believers are to be watchful and prayerful. This is not passivity on our part, but actively putting a great deal of energy into becoming wise and interceding on behalf of others.

If we cannot sit still in silence, in contemplative prayer, for even 20 minutes, then we have a problem. It will be quite difficult to discern the good, right, and just.

If we cannot go half the day without making a judgmental statement about another person, then we have an addiction which needs to be broken.

If we continue to have reasons why we cannot (and therefore will not) read or listen to Holy Scripture, especially the New Testament Gospels of Jesus, then we are likely following someone else other than Christ.

If we keep moaning about the state of the world, the problems in our families, and all the local issues of our communities, then it is imperative that we come back to examining the words and ways of Jesus and deal with our own junk, instead lamenting everyone else’s.

If you know how to prepare for a zombie apocalypse, a new movie that’s coming out, or a birthday party for someone, but don’t have any idea about how to make life preparations for a coming disaster (let alone your own eventual death) then the last thing that ought to be happening is judging another person for anything at all.

You’ve got some work to do to get ready for the coming of Christ.

“Let us be alert to the season in which we are living. It is the season of the Blessed Hope, calling for us to cut our ties with the world and build ourselves on this One who will soon appear. He is our hope—a Blessed Hope enabling us to rise above our times and fix our gaze upon Him.”

It’s possible that you may want to judge me for saying not to be judgmental. It’s happened more than once in my life. Yet, if we can learn to distinguish between the person and the behavior, then we can deal with unjust behavior, and leave any condemnation of the person to God.

If ever we struggle to know what to do, one can never go wrong with showing grace.

Gracious God, I repent for being quick to pass judgement both in speech and thought. For every time my words or actions of judgment and condemnation have hurt someone, I repent. Lord, I pray that I will not focus on the faults or shortcomings of others. Help me to see others through the eyes of grace. Amen.

Rejected (Luke 4:16-30)

When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
    because he has anointed me
        to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
    and recovery of sight to the blind,
        to set free those who are oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 

All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?” 

He said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘Doctor, cure yourself!’ And you will say, ‘Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum.’ ” 

And he said, “Truly I tell you; no prophet is accepted in his hometown. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months and there was a severe famine over all the land, yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were also many with a skin disease in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.” 

When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the middle of them and went on his way. (New Revised Standard Version)

Reject:

  1. to refuse to have, take, recognize, etc.; to deny
  2. to refuse to grant (a request, a demand, etc.)
  3. to refuse to accept (someone or something); to rebuff, renounce, or repel
  4. to discard as useless or unsatisfactory; to jettison or eliminate
  5. to cast out or eject; vomit
  6. to cast out or off

Rejection can be mutual, and cut both ways. This appears to have been the case with Jesus and the synagogue goers in his hometown of Nazareth.

The townsfolk rejection of Jesus went far enough to want to throw him off a cliff. They were enraged with anger. Christ recognized the people’s rejection of him, long before they realized it themselves. Christ’s rejection of unjust and unbiblical ideas and practices went far enough to rebuke the congregation from the scriptures.

The difference in the two rejections was that the synagogue attenders were denying Jesus himself; whereas Jesus was refusing to accept a longstanding tradition of hate toward a certain group of people.

The nub of the rejection, which went both ways, had to do with non-Jewish persons, that is, Gentiles.

If you think this to be a silly sort of thing, especially of getting so worked up as to try and kill someone, then consider how frothed-up people get concerning contemporary political elections.

Jesus being pro-Gentile was not only unpopular; it was unheard of. So, the people rejected him.

The synagogue being anti-Christ meant that they were anti-Gentile and anti-God, as far as Jesus was concerned. And he wasn’t about to put up with it. So, he rejected not the people, but their entrenched hatred and unscriptural stance.

Jesus took the prophecy of Isaiah about proclaiming liberty to captives, and freedom for the oppressed, and then applied it, not to his fellow Jews who were present, but to, of all people, Gentiles.

Christ pointed out that in the days of Elijah, the prophet was sent to a Gentile woman. In addition, he let everyone know that the prophet Elisha cleansed a Gentile. 

The gathered synagogue worshipers understood exactly what Jesus was saying and doing – he was claiming to be the ultimate prophet, sent for those despised people. 

It was too much for the gathered folk to take. So all hell broke loose as the “worshipers” became so angry and insolent that they drove Jesus out of town and tried to chuck him off a cliff to his death.

Jesus had that kind of effect throughout his earthly ministry by saying and doing the unexpected, and the unwanted.

The people of Nazareth seemed to have always interpreted the message of Isaiah and the prophets as being for themselves, not others. 

This is a probing story for today’s Christian Church. Whenever we lose sight of a biblical message and re-interpret it as being for only us, then we end up like the Nazarenes of old who did not recognize Jesus for who he really is and what he really came to do. 

Perhaps the burning question from today’s Gospel lesson for individual Christians and all churches is this: Are you ready to throw Jesus off a cliff?

Spend some time alone with God today. Consider whether you have made Jesus into the image of what you want him to be, or whether you accept him as he is. 

One clue to this is if you believe some person or people group should not have Jesus – he belongs to people like us. This, by the way, is the very definition of “rejection.”

It could be that some soul-searching repentance is in order, so that Christians will be true worshipers of Jesus, and not just spectator fans of him.

O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your Son: Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

I Am Among You As One Who Serves (Luke 22:24-30)

A dispute also arose among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest. But he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you; rather the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.

“You are those who have stood by me in my trials; and I confer on you, just as my Father has conferred on me, a kingdom, so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. (New Revised Standard Version)

Jesus and his disciples had prepared for the Passover meal. They ate and drank together. Christ gave them words which have endured throughout Christian history as the Lord’s Supper. He spoke of the bread as his body, and the cup as the new covenant in his blood. Jesus communed with them and communicated about his impending death.

It was a moving experience for all. The disciples received from their Lord an intense act of love; and a new humanity around Christ’s body and blood. Indeed, the essence of new life is self-sacrificial love.

And then… the disciples began quarreling with each other about positions, and titles, and honors, and who was better, and who would be top dog in God’s kingdom….

It was a moment that I think every parent can relate to, at some level. Sitting around a dinner table, enjoying a rich conversation, becoming close with one another as a family… and then the kids begin bickering with each other about the most mundane of things.

Just a minute ago, you believed you were getting somewhere, and experiencing a shared family bond of love, commitment, and purpose… and then, in a matter of seconds, it all crashes down in a ridiculous display of posturing and positioning of one sibling over another….

I admit, this has happened to me more than once, when my own kids were growing up. And I also admit that I lost my sanctification on more than one occasion, watching this crazy schizophrenic scene play out in front of me.

Which is why I have a lot of respect for Jesus in responding to his disciples with humility, calmness, and a forthright spirit. He addressed their puny questions in a way that rebuked them without making them feel like they just got a Dad lecture.

In the sort of table fellowship that Jesus practiced with his disciples throughout his earthly ministry, he consistently sought to undermine the existing systems of domination in all levels of society. Even the religious system of Christ’s day had a distinct stratifying of persons in an inequitable structure of power.

The kingdom of God, however, is different. God’s economy is characterized by equality, mutuality, diversity, and shared power. It’s all based in a communal, as well as individual, relational connection with the Creator God.

God almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, is gracious, merciful, and kind. The Lord brings rain on both the righteous and the wicked. Thus, any sort of claim to being greater or superior or better than another person or group of people, has no place around the table of Christ’s body and blood.

Catholics are no better than Protestants. Evangelical Christians have no superiority over Progressive Christians. The Coptic Church doesn’t have the high ground on Eastern Orthodoxy. Christians who observe the Lord’s Supper as a remembrance are not greater than those who discern the Table as a sacrament.

And if one has the ears to hear it, Christians really ought to know better than to believe they should have greater control over the world and its systems than Buddhists, Muslims, or Jews.

Puffing up one’s chest and insisting that “My Dad is better than your Dad” is the stuff of childish preoccupations, and not of God’s kingdom.

There are plenty of people in this old messed-up world who lord their power and authority over others. If we take the words of Jesus seriously, Christians are not to be part of that structure and system.

And yet, here we are, in this contemporary time and place in history, having a chunk of the population thinking Christendom is the way to go, that a form of Christian Nationalism should be the political system – as if the kingdom of God and the kingdom of this world are what’s on the ballot.

Christians are the very folks who need to insist on serving, not leading; building up, not tearing down; loving, not hating; being integrated and connected, not fragmented and disconnected from others, as well as from reality.

Any sort of earthly power and authority the Christian has, must be used to include, help, and support, instead of excluding, ignoring, and destroying. The greatest among us must become like the youngest, and the leader like one who serves.

Christians must support and promote the idea of political office as a public service; and the concept of being a citizen as serving the common good of all persons, not just some persons.

Jesus came to this earth to serve. Therefore, his followers are also to serve. The words and ways of Christ centered in humble service, merciful justice, and prayer for one’s enemies. His followers must do no less.

Jesus Christ came to usher in a moral and ethical kingdom in which God’s gracious and benevolent will is done on this earth, as it is always done in heaven. He did not come to make sure Christians have lots of political power and authority over all the non-Christians.

Yes, indeed, we will be given power and authority – but not to baptize existing earthly structures so that the system serves the interests of Christians. We receive so that we can give. We give so that we might serve. And we serve because our Lord is a servant.

So, if Christians truly desire to bring change and transformation to this world, it will be through a compassionate and caring system of service to our fellow humanity – and not by imposing our beliefs and will upon others in a modern day form of the Inquisition.

Let us then, traffic in love; aspire to meekness; practice servanthood; and become the wait staff for the world’s needs.

That is what it really means to stand with Jesus in this time of trial.

Gracious and loving God, you work everywhere reconciling, loving, and healing your creatures and your creation. In your Son, and through the power of your Holy Spirit, you invite each of us to join you in your work.

I ask you to form me more and more in your image and likeness, through my prayers and worship of you; and through the study of Holy Scripture, so that my eyes will be fully opened to your mission in the world.

Send me into my family, church, community, workplace, and world to serve Christ with faith, hope, and love, through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

You Live For Whatever You Love (Luke 16:14-18)

The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.

“The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing their way into it. It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.

“Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. (New International Version)

No one can serve two masters. Everyone is committed to something, based upon who or what they are truly serving. Everybody has a master which informs them of ultimate values in life.

In other words, we live for what or whom we love.

Money

The Gospel writer Luke flatly and unequivocally mentioned the Pharisees as loving money. They lived for it. Money was their ultimate value.

With money as master, God is not.

If one’s thoughts, desires, and motives are fueled by Master Money, then that person can say they love and serve God, but they would be lying through their teeth.

If one’s activities are dominated by investments, buying and selling, and conversations with financial planners, then it isn’t God to whom they are praying; Mammon is their God.

The servants of Master Money may attempt to justify themselves, and rationalize their service to Mammon. They might talk about how much they give to charitable organizations, support their local church with monetary gifts, and underwrite a community building project. Yet, the real muster of benevolence is to whom all the money is truly being directed.

Money itself is not the problem; it’s the love of money that’s the issue (1 Timothy 6:10). Such a love of money had taken root into the Pharisee’s heart. They were offended by the words of Jesus, who exposed their true master.

Kingdom

The religious leaders claimed to be all about the Mosaic Law – which is why Jesus addressed this. In Christ’s view, the law and the prophets were until John the Baptist. John’s ministry caused a kerfuffle, because he was the forerunner of Messiah. He pointed to Jesus as the hoped for Savior.

The kingdom of God was at hand. But the religious establishment was too rooted in money as their ultimate deliverer.

Jesus is the Son over God’s house, and the Ruler of God’s empire. Christ is the kingdom. Since the time of John, the kingdom of God has been proclaimed, and everyone is pressing into it.

Multitudes of people flocked and followed Jesus in his earthly ministry. They listened to him talk of God’s kingdom being near. They seized hold of it, striving and pressing to get in.

There were folks who dropped everything, gave up everything, and forsook everything, just to pursue the kingdom of God. Their press toward the kingdom was a reflection of their values. And money had nothing to do with it.

Those who are Christians, in name only, may know something of Jesus and might talk a good line of theology, but they are far from the kingdom of God. They talk, but they don’t press. Someone who presses cries out with the psalmist:

How lovely is your dwelling place,
    Lord Almighty!
My soul yearns, even faints,
    for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh cry out
    for the living God. (Psalm 84:1-2, NIV)

Someone who presses is ready and willing to do some heavy spiritual lifting. They’ll put in the time and the effort toward the kingdom of God. It’s Jesus they think about, not money.

Law

Believers and followers of Jesus are concerned for what God cares about. And Jesus was concerned about Holy Scripture. He intended on keeping every jot and tittle of the Torah, the Law.

Although we have many differing interpretations of varying passages in the Bible, Jesus is still concerned for the fulfillment of all God’s good promises. Our own angst about upholding the Bible isn’t shared by Christ. Our arguments and divisions don’t sway Jesus into our anxiety.

Christ knows that every word of God shall not fail. It would be easier for the world to spontaneously blow up than for any one word of God to fall away unfulfilled. Money and stuff will pass away, but not God’s Word.

The basic moral and ethical will and law of God hasn’t gone anywhere. Just because the Ten Commandments are not posted publicly anywhere, doesn’t mean they have disappeared.

God’s holy law is like a mirror in front of us, showing us how we are to judge ourselves. The Apostle Paul likened the law to a schoolmaster that drives us to Christ (Galatians 3:24-27).

Furthermore, the law acts as a restraint to evil in the world. It has the value of revealing to us what is not pleasing to God. And if I am pressing into the kingdom of God, I want to know what God loves and hates.

The Pharisees were supposedly the experts in God’s law. Some folks are quite hard on the Pharisees. Yet, rather than bashing on them as a group of people, we need to let the law be our own mirror; we must be concerned with our own righteousness, or lack thereof.

It’s easy for us, along with the old Pharisees, to be legalists – adding principles and traditions to the law that are not the law itself. Holding to these traditions can become as important, or more, as the actual law. They can end up becoming the standard we judge everything by, instead of the actual law, as it is.

Divorce

The morass of traditions surrounding the law is what Jesus was referring to in speaking about divorce. Christ had no use for a husband who could divorce his wife for various incidents, including not being pretty anymore, breaking a dish, or burning the toast.

All of that rigmarole was why Jesus came back to affirming the sanctity of marriage. He pointed out that divorce under conditions of tradition, not law, were tantamount to adultery. Christ was thinking of women’s rights.

In a society in which women were dependent upon men for having their needs met, Jesus did not want women to experience injustice from men. In God’s economy, men are neither free to do whatever they want with women, nor with marriage. Their money needs to be used for wife and family, and not in cleverly contrived ways to get around the law.

We live for what we love. If someone loves money, it will not end well for them. If someone loves God and doing God’s will, then there is life and peace.

Let’s just make sure that we are truly doing God’s will, and not our own secret or unconscious intentions. Because no one can serve two masters.

Blessed God, help me to do Your revealed will fully, gladly, and immediately; and to love You with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. Enable us all to love our neighbors as ourselves; and to seek the good of people from everywhere. Save us from being unhappy Christians. Deliver us from the sinful habit of complaint. May we rejoice in You, be constant in prayer, and give thanks in all circumstances; through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the strength of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
