Facing Death (1 Kings 1:1-30)

King David was now a very old man, and although his servants covered him with blankets, he could not keep warm. So his officials said to him, “Your Majesty, let us find a young woman to stay with you and take care of you. She will lie close to you and keep you warm.” 

A search was made all over Israel for a beautiful young woman, and in Shunem they found such a woman named Abishag, and brought her to the king. She was very beautiful, and waited on the king and took care of him, but he did not have intercourse with her.

Now that Absalom was dead, Adonijah, the son of David and Haggith, was the oldest surviving son. He was a very handsome man. David had never reprimanded him about anything, and he was ambitious to be king.

He provided for himself chariots, horses, and an escort of fifty men. He talked with Joab (whose mother was Zeruiah) and with Abiathar the priest, and they agreed to support his cause. But Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei, Rei, and David’s bodyguards were not on Adonijah’s side.

One day Adonijah offered a sacrifice of sheep, bulls, and fattened calves at Snake Rock, near the spring of Enrogel. He invited the other sons of King David and the king’s officials who were from Judah to come to this sacrificial feast, but he did not invite his half-brother Solomon or Nathan the prophet or Benaiah or the king’s bodyguards.

Then Nathan went to Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother, and asked her, “Haven’t you heard that Haggith’s son Adonijah has made himself king? And King David doesn’t know anything about it! If you want to save your life and the life of your son Solomon, I would advise you to go at once to King David and ask him, ‘Your Majesty, didn’t you solemnly promise me that my son Solomon would succeed you as king? How is it, then, that Adonijah has become king?’” And Nathan added, “Then, while you are still talking with King David, I will come in and confirm your story.”

So Bathsheba went to see the king in his bedroom. He was very old, and Abishag, the young woman from Shunem, was taking care of him. Bathsheba bowed low before the king, and he asked, “What do you want?”

She answered, “Your Majesty, you made me a solemn promise in the name of the Lord your God that my son Solomon would be king after you. But Adonijah has already become king, and you don’t know anything about it. He has offered a sacrifice of many bulls, sheep, and fattened calves, and he invited your sons, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the commander of your army to the feast, but he did not invite your son Solomon. Your Majesty, all the people of Israel are looking to you to tell them who is to succeed you as king. If you don’t, as soon as you are dead, my son Solomon and I will be treated as traitors.”

She was still speaking, when Nathan arrived at the palace. The king was told that the prophet was there, and Nathan went in and bowed low before the king. Then he said, “Your Majesty, have you announced that Adonijah would succeed you as king? This very day he has gone and offered a sacrifice of many bulls, sheep, and fattened calves. He invited all your sons, Joab the commander of your army, and Abiathar the priest, and right now they are feasting with him and shouting, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’ But he did not invite me, sir, or Zadok the priest or Benaiah or Solomon. Did Your Majesty approve all this and not even tell your officials who is to succeed you as king?”

King David said, “Ask Bathsheba to come back in”—and she came and stood before him. Then he said to her, “I promise you by the living Lord, who has rescued me from all my troubles, that today I will keep the promise I made to you in the name of the Lord, the God of Israel, that your son Solomon would succeed me as king.” (Good News Translation)

Death isn’t exactly a popular subject. You might think, since all of us will eventually experience it personally, and most of us have seen it up close through dying loved ones, we would talk it up as something to face and deal with squarely. And yet, we don’t.

Ideally, death ought to teach us how to live, how to face our limitations, and how to accept hardship and the inevitable.

If we will let today’s Old Testament lesson speak to us concerning the subject of death, we can observe four differing responses to the impending death of King David…

King David’s servants: death as a problem to solve

The servants of David treated his downward health as a problem to be solved. They essentially sidestepped the issue of death. Perhaps they believed it to be too negative a subject, or were simply too uncomfortable with the prospect of losing their king.

King David’s servants remembered well the vigorous David who took on enemies and problems. They wanted him to act like a king, so they looked for the miracle cure of a virgin who would be some sort of fix for David.

In the ancient world, a king’s vitality was always linked to his sexual vigor. The servants thought if they could arouse David, he would be back to his old kingly self. In other words, the servants were trying to avoid death. And, of course, it didn’t work.

King David’s son Adonijah: death as an opportunity to seize

Whereas the servants were scheming a way to get the old David back in the saddle, Adonijah was impatient to see his father David in the grave. He sought to use death for his own advantage.

Adonijah wanted his dad, the king, out of the way, so that he could pursue his own kingship. So, he simply proclaimed himself king, hoping to hasten David’s death.

The guy was looking for an opportunity; and, I might add, Adonijah ended up losing his own life for it. He never understood the true dynamics of life and death – that life is complicated, death should be honored, and not used for personal gain.

King David’s wife Bathsheba: death as a difficulty to navigate

Honestly, I have a lot of compassion for Bathsheba, because she got a raw deal earlier in her life with David. Bathsheba was married to Uriah, and was used by David, ending up in her husband’s death.

But then King David took her in and made Bathsheba one of his many wives. After their first child together died, they had Solomon. And this was the person Bathsheba really cared about. She wanted to make sure her son Solomon became king.

Reading today’s narrative, you may wonder why King David needed a virgin – where was his wife? Bathsheba showed up to see David, not because she wanted to keep him warm and comfort him, but because she was concerned for her son.

For Bathsheba, David became a means to an end – someone who could help her negotiate a difficult situation. She sought to navigate the complicated politics around death.

King David’s caregiver Abishag: death as a reality to witness

Throughout the story, we have no recorded words from Abishag. Everyone else had plenty to say. In contrast to all of the other people, Abishag was simply a witness to David’s deteriorating health, and eventual death.

She seems to me like a hospice worker, who exists to ease the person’s pain at end of life. In this, we can perhaps learn more from Abishag than from anyone else – to be present, listen, and serve.

Unfortunately, death brings out the worst in some people. But if we will face death, and not view it as a problem to be solved, an opportunity to be seized, or a difficulty to be negotiated, I believe we will find the grace of God when we become sacred witnesses to death.

Jesus faced death. He did not try and avoid death; was not impatient to get death over with; and did not stoically endure death as a difficulty. Christ’s death is life – bringing meaning to both life and death.

Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend all your servants staring death in the face today. We humbly ask that you acknowledge these sheep of your own fold, these lambs of your own flock, and these sinners of your own redeeming. Receive them into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen.

How It’s Built Matters (1 Kings 6:1-4, 21-22)

Four hundred and eighty years after the people of Israel left Egypt, during the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the second month, the month of Ziv, Solomon began work on the Temple. Inside it was 90 feet long, 30 feet wide, and 45 feet high. The entrance room was 15 feet deep and 30 feet wide, as wide as the sanctuary itself. The walls of the Temple had openings in them, narrower on the outside than on the inside….

The inside of the Temple was covered with gold, and gold chains were placed across the entrance of the inner room, which was also covered with gold. The whole interior of the Temple was covered with gold, as well as the altar in the Most Holy Place. (Good News Translation)

The first major accomplishment – and the crowning achievement – of King Solomon’s reign was building the Temple in Jerusalem. His father, King David, had it in his heart to erect a great Temple for God as both a place of worship, and a permanent place for the Ark of the Covenant to rest. However, the Lord clearly instructed David not to build the Temple, but stated that his son would do so. (1 Chronicles 28:1-21)

Solomon spared no expense for building the Temple. He ordered vast quantities of cedar wood from King Hiram of Tyre, and had huge blocks of stone quarried for the building’s foundation. In order to complete the massive project, Solomon imposed forced labor on all his subjects, drafting people for work shifts that sometimes lasted a month at a time. (1 Kings 5:1-18)

And there was the gold – lots of it! The inside of the Temple was completely covered with gold. Gold is physically and metaphorically one of the most malleable metals on the planet: one gram of gold can be beaten into a 1-square meter sheet, and gold has been used as a symbol for everything from religious devotion to great wealth and immense power.

As glorious and elaborate as the Temple was, the most important room was perhaps the greatest theological statement of all; it contained almost no furniture. Known as the Holy of Holies, it housed the two tablets of the Ten Commandments inside of the Ark of the Covenant. The unseen and almighty God of the universe doesn’t really need a house, and most certainly cannot be contained within one.

Only once a year, on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) the High Priest entered the most sacred Holy of Holies and pray to God on behalf of the Israelite nation. God’s world and God’s word are holy. It was understood that the Ten Commandments are very holy words, with the name of God being the holiest word of all. The Temple – by its sheer architecture – communicated what was most important about God.

Yet, the way in which the Temple was constructed was very different from how the earlier Tabernacle was built. The Tabernacle was a sort of mobile temple for the wilderness journey. The entire community worked together in giving their possessions and services in order to make the Tabernacle a reality.

Without the contributions of the people, the project probably would not have happened at all. But the chance to help out in all the myriad ways of making things for the sanctuary, pulled everyone together in a high degree of compliance. (Exodus 36:1-6)

Indeed, the building of the Tabernacle was a consensual enterprise; the people’s faith was the wellspring of their philanthropy. Yet, in contrast, the mode by which Solomon carried out the construction of the permanent Temple was by sheer wealth, forced labor, and strong administrative business deals.

There was no community participation in the form of voluntarism in Solomon’s financing of the Temple build. To pay for the cedar and cypress wood provided by the King of Tyre and to quarry and transport the building materials, Solomon issued a massive levy. In other words, there wasn’t any free labor and no robust public spirit animating the construction.

The Tabernacle for which the people volunteered wholeheartedly never fell victim to evil. The Temple, however, eventually and certainly did – in large part due to the evil of the kings who presided over the theocracy.  

The fate of any institution is determined by how it is created in the first place. No matter what the polity and organizational structure is, it cannot long survive without popular support. Solomon’s Temple, despite all of its grandeur and gold, rested on a shaky foundation and sandy soil.

After the Temple was constructed, the sacrificial system was authorized only in Jerusalem and at the Temple. Everything was centralized under the behemoth of Solomon’s system. What’s more, practices like volunteerism and community participation were largely replaced with systems of heavy taxation and a large debt. That’s one reason the kingdom immediately split apart after Solomon’s death.

Perhaps if the selfless ethos that went into building the Tabernacle was utilized by Solomon in the building of the Temple, maybe the fate of king after king in Israel would have been quite different. For it is in the spirit of volunteerism and a concern for the public welfare that governments attentive to the common good of all persons are built. How something is built matters.

Almighty and gracious God of all, we humbly offer our gratitude for the blessing of selfless volunteers and those who participate freely in ministries of justice and service. Thank you for their tireless dedication and benevolence.

May your Spirit bless them with continual guidance as they faithfully serve others. Give them resilience, daring, and fortitude. Let joy, peace, and satisfaction be upon the good work that they do. Inspire and motivate them to persist through trying circumstances, steadfast in their dedication to aiding those around them.

Help us all to reflect the profound beauty and compassion of your divine love. Amen.

With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility (1 Kings 16:1-7)

This message from the Lord was delivered to King Baasha by the prophet Jehu son of Hanani: “I lifted you out of the dust to make you ruler of my people Israel, but you have followed the evil example of Jeroboam. You have provoked my anger by causing my people Israel to sin. So now I will destroy you and your family, just as I destroyed the descendants of Jeroboam son of Nebat. The members of Baasha’s family who die in the city will be eaten by dogs, and those who die in the field will be eaten by vultures.”

The rest of the events in Baasha’s reign and the extent of his power are recorded in The Book of the History of the Kings of Israel. When Baasha died, he was buried in Tirzah. Then his son Elah became the next king.

The message from the Lord against Baasha and his family came through the prophet Jehu son of Hanani. It was delivered because Baasha had done what was evil in the Lord’s sight (just as the family of Jeroboam had done), and also because Baasha had destroyed the family of Jeroboam. The Lord’s anger was provoked by Baasha’s sins. (New Living Translation)

That’s one of those popular modern proverbs that resonate with us because we readily acknowledge the truth of it. No matter the culture, ethnicity, or place, we all have an inherent sense of justice and what is right.

And that makes sense to me, since we are created in the image of the Lord who is a God of justice and cares about what is right and good. So, whenever a person or a people buck their conscience, and practice injustice, it will raise the ire of both other people, as well as God.

Anger, at its core, is a response to injustice. Whenever we are treated unfairly in some way and are denied what we need to survive and thrive in this life, it makes us mad! Not only that, but it also makes God mad, too.

The use and abuse of power is a vital issue. Power must not be accumulated simply for someone (or a particular group of people) to enjoy its privileges. Power is given by God to individuals and groups so that they will use their position and authority for the common good of everyone.

To possess power is to possess a great moral responsibility for making good and just decisions. If the people in power fail to do this, then they shall be held accountable by a sovereign God who has ultimate authority over everyone and everything.

King Baasha of Israel was given a solemn responsibility by God to ensure the proper worship of God and to provide for the needs of everyone in the kingdom. In a theocratic society such as ancient Israel, the king served as the person who was responsible for knowing the commands of God and making sure that they were fulfilled. And that meant that justice for all should be ensconced throughout the land, and injustice should be eradicated wherever it is found.

By discarding the proper worship of God, and instead following other gods who engaged in injustice, Baasha was shirking his responsibility and setting up the nation for the misuse and abuse of power. So, God was determined to uproot the evil so that it didn’t destroy the whole nation.

“Whoever has been given much will be responsible for much. Much more will be expected from the one who has been given more.”

We all possess some level of power – whether it be small or great. Everyone is held responsible for what they have. If we have been blessed with talent, wealth, knowledge, time, position – or whatever it is – it’s expected that we benefit others. With whatever we have received, we are, in turn, to give for the sake of another.

Each of you has been blessed with one of God’s many wonderful gifts to be used in the service of others. So use your gift well. (1 Peter 4:10, CEV)

It’s not a matter of how much or how little power you have been given, but how faithful you are with the power you actually possess. Those who are trusted with something valuable must show they are worthy of that trust by stewarding their resources and their decision-making well. (1 Corinthians 4:2)

God’s anger serves the purpose of fueling God’s great purposes in justice for all people everywhere. And if we channel our own anger into love for all humanity, then we are rightly ordering our own power in good, redemptive, and responsible ways.

Almighty and eternal God, empower us all by your Spirit to be good, just, and faithful stewards of the power and authority you have given to us. Help us to live conscientiously, to bless others graciously and generously with the grace and generosity given to us by your goodness. May the very life of Christ be manifested in us and through us to your glory and honor. Amen.

Make Good Choices (1 Kings 14:1-8)

At that time Abijah son of Jeroboam became ill, and Jeroboam said to his wife, “Go, disguise yourself, so you won’t be recognized as the wife of Jeroboam. Then go to Shiloh. Ahijah the prophet is there—the one who told me I would be king over this people. Take ten loaves of bread with you, some cakes and a jar of honey, and go to him. He will tell you what will happen to the boy.” So Jeroboam’s wife did what he said and went to Ahijah’s house in Shiloh.

Now Ahijah could not see; his sight was gone because of his age. But the Lord had told Ahijah, “Jeroboam’s wife is coming to ask you about her son, for he is ill, and you are to give her such and such an answer. When she arrives, she will pretend to be someone else.”

So when Ahijah heard the sound of her footsteps at the door, he said, “Come in, wife of Jeroboam. Why this pretense? I have been sent to you with bad news. Go, tell Jeroboam that this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I raised you up from among the people and appointed you ruler over my people Israel. I tore the kingdom away from the house of David and gave it to you, but you have not been like my servant David, who kept my commands and followed me with all his heart, doing only what was right in my eyes. You have done more evil than all who lived before you. You have made for yourself other gods, idols made of metal; you have aroused my anger and turned your back on me.

“‘Because of this, I am going to bring disaster on the house of Jeroboam. I will cut off from Jeroboam every last male in Israel—slave or free. I will burn up the house of Jeroboam as one burns dung, until it is all gone. Dogs will eat those belonging to Jeroboam who die in the city, and the birds will feed on those who die in the country. The Lord has spoken!’

“As for you, go back home. When you set foot in your city, the boy will die. All Israel will mourn for him and bury him. He is the only one belonging to Jeroboam who will be buried, because he is the only one in the house of Jeroboam in whom the Lord, the God of Israel, has found anything good.

“The Lord will raise up for himself a king over Israel who will cut off the family of Jeroboam. Even now this is beginning to happen. And the Lord will strike Israel, so that it will be like a reed swaying in the water. He will uproot Israel from this good land that he gave to their ancestors and scatter them beyond the Euphrates River, because they aroused the Lord’s anger by making Asherah poles. And he will give Israel up because of the sins Jeroboam has committed and has caused Israel to commit.”

Then Jeroboam’s wife got up and left and went to Tirzah. As soon as she stepped over the threshold of the house, the boy died. They buried him, and all Israel mourned for him, as the Lord had said through his servant the prophet Ahijah. (New International Version)

It’s a sad reality that whenever we make choices to live against the grain of who are meant to be as humans, we not only harm ourselves, but other people also end up as collateral damage. Our own individual decisions may be independent, but the ramifications of those choices are always interdependent in scope and complexity.

The very same prophet who prophesied the rise of Jeroboam and his reign also prophesied his calamitous ending. Along with the establishment of a monarchy in Israel, there was also an ascension of divine prophets to the royal kings whenever things were going awry.

The prophet Ahijah had let King Jeroboam know, at the outset of his reign, that his longevity would depend upon his own faithfulness and attentiveness to God’s law (1 Kings 11:38). But Jeroboam failed to do this, and it doomed him and his family. The immediate death of Jeroboam’s young son was the confirmation of the divine judgment that would eventually come.

It behooves us all to consider the Apostle Paul’s words concerning fidelity toward God and our decisions as persons:

Make no mistake, God is not mocked. A person will harvest what they plant. Those who plant only for their own benefit will harvest devastation from their selfishness, but those who plant for the benefit of the Spirit will harvest eternal life from the Spirit. Let’s not get tired of doing good, because in time we’ll have a harvest if we don’t give up. So then, let’s work for the good of all whenever we have an opportunity, and especially for those in the household of faith. (Galatians 6:7-10, CEB)

Jeroboam turned his back on God, in favor of going with his own ingenuity and pragmatic actions to secure his rule and reign in Israel. No matter who we are – whether king or commoner, rich or poor – it is our personal and collective responsibility to ensure that sound, wise, and good decisions are being made with an eye toward the benefit of all persons.

This then, begs the question: What are our priorities and practices?

Prophetic utterances in Holy Scripture typically center in human arrogance and mistreatment of other people. And this is why following the commands of God are to be supremely important to the believer – because the instructions given to humanity from the Lord are meant for humility and justice toward others.

I believe that if we seek to live into the spirit of God’s law, we will continually labor to make good choices for the common good of everyone. Important social, economic, and political policies and practices won’t just spring up from nowhere to benefit humanity; they must be intentionally cultivated by people who make it a priority to pay attention to such matters and follow through with the right, the just, and the good.

Let’s persevere in doing good; and not succumb to the pragmatic, just to get something done that we want.

Almighty God our heavenly Father, you declare your glory and show forth your handiwork in the heavens and in the earth: Deliver us in our various occupations from the service of self alone, that we may do the work you give us to do in truth and beauty and for the common good; for the sake of him who came among us as one who serves, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
