It’s All About Love (Song of Songs 2:1-7)

I am a rose of Sharon,
a lily growing
in the valleys.

Like a lily among thorns,
so is my true love among the young women.

[ BRIDE ]

Like an apple tree among the trees in the forest,
so is my beloved among the young men.
I want to sit in his shadow.
His fruit tastes sweet to me.
He leads me into a banquet room
and looks at me with love.
Strengthen me with raisins
and refresh me with apples
because I am weak from love.
His left hand is under my head.
His right hand caresses me.

Young women of Jerusalem, swear to me
by the gazelles
or by the does in the field
that you will not awaken love
or arouse love before its proper time. (God’s Word Translation)

Notice how the flowers grow in the field. They never work or spin yarn for clothes. But I say that not even Solomon in all his majesty was dressed like one of these flowers. (Matthew 6:28-29)

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. (Deuteronomy 6:5)

As long as I have you, I don’t need anyone else in heaven or on earth.

Psalm 73:25

There is nothing quite like a field of flowers. Along the coastal plain of the Mediterranean Sea, south of Mount Carmel, is Sharon. In the ancient world, there was found crocuses, tulips, and hibiscus.

These days, in the Spring of the year, one can see bindweed and pimpernel, sage and iris, as well as orchids and poppies. In addition, lilies bloom throughout the valleys of the Middle East. In the Spring, flowers are commonplace in the valleys and countryside.

In today’s Old Testament lesson, the bride in this poetic ode to love and beauty, is saying there is nothing special about her. There are many women, and she in no way stands amongst them all.

Love says otherwise. Love picks out the individual. In the Song, the groom views the bride as if a flower among thorns. There is a beauty that attracts him to her. She may be a commoner, yet her beautiful qualities stand out and are attractive. All others pale in comparison to her.

Likewise, the bride basks in the security of the groom, finding all others tasteless compared to him. He is like an apple tree that provides shade, and whose fruit is delicious.

There is a mutual attraction that is life-giving and beautiful. It is more than a fleeting infatuation. They see within each other the qualities which will bind and sustain them when there are rough times and hard roads.

Beauty is much more than outward appearance. It is the endearing inner qualities of a good and right spirit, which is outwardly seen in a visage of compassion and caring, gentleness and humility, purity and peace.

Such beauty, in and out, causes one to swoon with love – hence, making one love-sick. Love is powerful. It is not to be corrupted by the lust which only views another as an object to be gained.

We are to let the beauty and power of love develop, grow, and mature. The flowers of the field may seem to spring up overnight. However, the seeds and the bulbs have been awaiting the right time to take root, break the ground, grow up, and flower.

Love is both endearing and enduring. Love is to be nurtured and cultivated. It cannot be hurried. Love is an attention to the whole person, and seeks to endure for the long haul. It maintains a beautiful commitment into the growing coldness of autumn, and holds vigil through the season of winter. Love isn’t going anywhere.

But I am talking about Christ the groom, and Church the bride. Spiritual commitment is not really measured in doctrinal statements and dogmatic theology. It is shown and known by embracing Love with a capital “L.”

God is Love. Yes, God does loving deeds and actions. Yet, we are told that the very nature and character of God is Love. Jesus is Love incarnate, the embodiment of what Love sees and does in this world.

I am, of course, taking a decidedly Christian approach to the Song, and an allegorical view of it. This is why, if we delight in knowing and enjoying the Song, we discover the way to genuine spirituality, and the key which unlocks the whole of Holy Scripture.

Not everyone, of course, will agree with me or choose to go down this allegorical path. Perhaps this is why we have so much religion nowadays which is devoid of love, and chooses to focus on sterile doctrinal checklists to which we must ascribe.

Please don’t hear what I am not saying. Doctrine is important. Theology is a must. But if our doctrine and theology has no beauty, and has no thoughts of love, and is not basically oriented in the direction of love, then I strongly argue that it isn’t doctrine or theology at all!

“And what is proper love? One should love the Lord with an exceeding great and very strong love so that the soul be tied to the love of the Lord, finding itself totally absorbed in it, as if he were suffering of lovesickness, when his mind is never free because of love for that woman, and he is obsessed with her, whether sitting down, or standing up, even when he is eating and drinking. More than this should the love for the Lord be in the heart of those who love him, meditating on it constantly, even as God has commanded us: ‘With all your heart and with all your soul.’” – Maimonides, Jewish Rabbi and philosopher (1138-1204, C.E.)

We were created by God for love. God longs to love us; and we are to love God with our entire self – heart, soul, mind, and strength. What’s more, our own love for one another is shaped by the love we receive from God.

Indeed, the biblical book, Song of Songs, is not only in the literal middle of the Old Testament; it is also in the very heart of it. It is all about Love.

That we may Love as you Love!
That we may show patience, tolerance,
Kindness, caring and love to all!
O Compassionate One, grant compassion unto us;
That we may help all fellow souls in need!
Bless us with your Love, O God.

Making a Vow (1 Samuel 1:19-27)

The entire family got up early the next morning and went to worship the Lord once more. Then they returned home to Ramah. When Elkanah slept with Hannah, the Lord remembered her plea, and in due time she gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, “I asked the Lord for him.”

The next year Elkanah and his family went on their annual trip to offer a sacrifice to the Lord and to keep his vow. But Hannah did not go. She told her husband, “Wait until the boy is weaned. Then I will take him to the Tabernacle and leave him there with the Lord permanently.”

“Whatever you think is best,” Elkanah agreed. “Stay here for now, and may the Lord help you keep your promise.” So she stayed home and nursed the boy until he was weaned.

When the child was weaned, Hannah took him to the Tabernacle in Shiloh. They brought along a three-year-old bull for the sacrifice and a basket of flour and some wine. After sacrificing the bull, they brought the boy to Eli. “Sir, do you remember me?” Hannah asked. “I am the very woman who stood here several years ago praying to the Lord. I asked the Lord to give me this boy, and he has granted my request. (New Living Translation)

Hannah had no children. In an era of patriarchy and polygamy, she had to put up with a rival wife verbally attacking her – not to mention a husband who seemed somewhat clueless to what was going on.

The piety of Hannah was unmatched. When worshiping the Lord in the tabernacle at Shiloh, Hannah offered a heartfelt prayer to God. She not only asked for help in her distressing situation, but also promised that if the Lord would give her a son, she would return to the Giver; thus, making the child a double gift to both herself and God.

God listened to Hannah and remembered her. Through her pregnancy and birth of a son, there is even more going on than displaying the Lord’s power over infertility. In taking divine initiative to do what Hannah asked, God demonstrated care and vindication for one of the least valued members of an ancient society that looked askance on infertile women.

In the patriarchal society, Hannah’s husband, Elkanah, could have nullified her vow to the Lord. But he allowed her promise to stand, and even encouraged it. Perhaps this was yet another sort of miracle, to have a husband move the great distance from unaware and aloof to aware and connected.

Hannah and Elkanah went to Shiloh, and back to the old priest Eli, not only making a typical animal sacrifice, but also offering their son, in fulfillment of Hannah’s vow to the Lord. Hannah very much took her vow to God seriously.

As you enter the house of God, keep your ears open and your mouth shut. It is evil to make mindless offerings to God. Don’t make rash promises, and don’t be hasty in bringing matters before God. After all, God is in heaven, and you are here on earth. So let your words be few.

Too much activity gives you restless dreams; too many words make you a fool.

When you make a promise to God, don’t delay in following through, for God takes no pleasure in fools. Keep all the promises you make to him. It is better to say nothing than to make a promise and not keep it. Don’t let your mouth make you sin. And don’t defend yourself by telling the Temple messenger that the promise you made was a mistake. That would make God angry, and he might wipe out everything you have achieved.

Talk is cheap, like daydreams and other useless activities. Fear God instead. (Ecclesiastes 5:1-7, NLT)

Any sort of commitment we express to God, no matter what, is to be taken seriously. Making vows to the Lord isn’t simply a way of helping us feel good about our relationship to God; rather, vows have important implications for our daily life and decisions.

What’s more, vows are not bribes. We don’t make deals with God. That’s because we have nothing to offer in any sort of human understanding of contractual obligations. A vow is a promise, a commitment to follow through with something. And the Lord will hold us accountable to our promises.

Hannah offered her son willingly and gladly to the Lord, and not begrudgingly. In fact, this may have been her thought all along to dedicate a child to God. In other words, giving up her son was not a sorrowful grief but a deep joy. Hannah raised the boy until he was weaned – which was likely, in that day and age, around 3 or 4 years old.

It’s quite possible that Hannah spent those formative years preparing her son for a life of service and doing all she could to help him get a good beginning in the Lord’s Tabernacle.

The biblical character of Hannah has a lot to teach us in our own journey of faith. She was completely devoted to God, found ways to honor and obey God, made a carefully crafted vow to God, persevered and never lost sight of what was important, and did it all with a spirit of obedience, initiative, spunk, gratitude, and gladness.

Hannah was motivated, principled, and sincere. Her good intentions developed into a focused vow, and she organized her life around her promise to God. Hannah did not overpromise or act impulsively; she knew what she was doing. And we have no record of her putting it all in her rival’s face.

God isn’t looking for grand ornate vows from us. The Lord just wants us to live obediently, with a good attitude, and follow through on our expressed commitments. And that’s one of the simplest paths to living a joyful and satisfied life.

Gracious and holy God, who creates, saves, blesses, and sustains us, these things we promise for this day and forevermore:

Never again shall we see another person as an enemy.
Never again shall we place our hope in power.
Never again shall we use violence against another person.
Never again shall we build walls to keep others out.
Never again shall we raise our hand in anger against others.
Never again shall we rob others of their dignity.
Never again shall we treat people differently based on the color of their skin or ethnicity.
Never again shall we take from others what is rightfully theirs.
Never again shall we make judgments about another’s gender identity.
Never again shall we blame another person or group for our own failings.
Never again shall we forget that we are all brothers and sisters.
Never again shall we refuse to listen to one another’s stories.
Never again shall we forget to love others as you love us.
Never again shall we forget that we belong to you.
Never again shall we forget to see ourselves caretakers of your whole creation.
Never again, Creator, shall we forget that you made us as we are, all colors,
shapes and sizes, and said, “Wow! Look at that. Now that is good!” Amen.

Set Apart for the Lord (Numbers 8:5-22)

The Lord said to Moses: “Take the Levites from among all the Israelites and make them ceremonially clean. To purify them, do this: Sprinkle the water of cleansing on them; then have them shave their whole bodies and wash their clothes. And so they will purify themselves. Have them take a young bull with its grain offering of the finest flour mixed with olive oil; then you are to take a second young bull for a sin offering.

“Bring the Levites to the front of the tent of meeting and assemble the whole Israelite community. You are to bring the Levites before the Lord, and the Israelites are to lay their hands on them. Aaron is to present the Levites before the Lord as a wave offering from the Israelites, so that they may be ready to do the work of the Lord.

“Then the Levites are to lay their hands on the heads of the bulls, using one for a sin offering to the Lord and the other for a burnt offering, to make atonement for the Levites. Have the Levites stand in front of Aaron and his sons and then present them as a wave offering to the Lord. In this way you are to set the Levites apart from the other Israelites, and the Levites will be mine.

“After you have purified the Levites and presented them as a wave offering, they are to come to do their work at the tent of meeting. They are the Israelites who are to be given wholly to me. I have taken them as my own in place of the firstborn, the first male offspring from every Israelite woman. Every firstborn male in Israel, whether human or animal, is mine. When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set them apart for myself. And I have taken the Levites in place of all the firstborn sons in Israel. 

“From among all the Israelites, I have given the Levites as gifts to Aaron and his sons to do the work at the tent of meeting on behalf of the Israelites and to make atonement for them so that no plague will strike the Israelites when they go near the sanctuary.”

Moses, Aaron and the whole Israelite community did with the Levites just as the Lord commanded Moses. The Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes. Then Aaron presented them as a wave offering before the Lord and made atonement for them to purify them. After that, the Levites came to do their work at the tent of meeting under the supervision of Aaron and his sons. They did with the Levites just as the Lord commanded Moses. (New International Version)

Holiness is very important to God; therefore, people are to be properly set apart for special divine work.

Perhaps we might think about this in the context of a professional vocation – which requires a good deal of training and development. The process, as well as the participants, need to be certified by a certification body. Without a specialized training, their work may hurt others, and even harm themselves.

Setting apart the Levites for the special work of caring for all the aspects of worship required a particular sort of calling, initiation, and ritual in order to have them ready – without harming themselves, or others. Because God is holy, things must be done in a way that helps, not harms.

The ritual for preparation essentially involved de-sinning the Levites, and purifying them from any ceremonial uncleanness. The community was to lay their hands on them, setting them apart for service as representatives of the people.

The Levites served before the Lord in a vicarious position, that is, all Israel came to God through them. They performed the needed sacrifices, handled the worship symbols and implements, and protected the sacred objects in the tent of God’s presence, the tabernacle.

With the Levites in their sacred role, they were near to the people, but distinct from them. They acted as a conduit between God and the people. Levites were something like the sunglasses protecting the people from the bright sun of the Lord’s presence; and like the workers laboring to make people thrive and flourish before God.

In the holiness of worship, the Levites were living sacrifices, offered to God for sacred purposes. So, as such, they understood their need to be continually pure of heart and free from anything that would defile them.

Sacrificial service was literally the job description of the Levites. They absolved themselves of any self-assertive ambitions, and pursued God’s will for the lives without question. This is, of course, the expected ideal, which would soon become deflated in the lives of the two older sons of Aaron the high priest.

Nevertheless, the descendants of Levi were a permanent visual aid and a daily reminder for God’s people of their unique status before Yahweh, as well as the redemption secured for them from Egyptian slavery. Whenever the people saw a Levite – consecrated to God – they knew that the Lord was with them.

God had said that the Levites belonged to him, were completely given over to the Lord, and set apart for dedicated holy and divine work. Moving into the New Testament, every Christian belongs to God, and those who labor for Christ and maintain holiness of life, demonstrate God’s ownership and special relationship to them.

Self-surrender and commitment to the common good of everyone in the community is supposed to be a hallmark of every Christian person. Whereas others may give themselves to self-discovery and self-fulfillment, followers of Jesus are to wholly dedicate themselves to self-sacrifice.

All believers, much like the ancient Levites, are called to a different life, with Christ as their constant mentor and model.

Loving God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, may the holy sacrifice of your Son cleanse my soul, strengthen my heart, pardon my past, and restore me in your peace. May I always adore you through my sacrificial service, fueled by your divine love. May I learn to sacrifice my own comfort, plans, and dreams, if it is not for your glory and the good of others. Amen.

Recover the Relational Commands (1 Timothy 6:13-16)

In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen. (New International Version)

Jesus is Lord, and Ceasar is not. The Apostle Paul’s letter to Timothy, in some ways, could be summed up in this way.

As Timothy ministered to the fledgling church in Ephesus, he was to continually keep his eyes on Jesus and take his cues for ministry on the apostolic teaching handed down to him. Timothy was not to get caught up in the fear of living in an Empire that commanded fealty to Ceasar as the supreme being over all.

Timothy was to flee all that is contrary to the sound doctrine of Christian faith. He was instead to pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Paul encouraged and exhorted Timothy to fight the good fight of the faith; and take hold of the eternal life to which he was called. Timothy was to live into his confession of Christ and his call from God.

Embrace Jesus as Lord, and quit trusting in Ceasar as Lord.

Although we see nothing subversive about today’s New Testament lesson, it very much was when Paul originally wrote it. The Apostle was essentially saying that, as Timothy goes about pastoring the church at Ephesus within the Roman Empire, he must always uphold the sovereignty and lordship of Jesus Christ as supreme – which, if seen by Roman authorities, would be taken as a subversive action against the state.

The Empire cares about submission to the state, and would see Jesus as Lord as Timothy and Paul teaching people to submit to a different ruler than Ceasar. And they would be right because neither Paul nor Timothy had any intention of engaging in the cult of Ceasar.

Contrary to the Roman imperial gods, and Ceasar himself, Paul lifted up the God who gives life to everything. It is this God – embodied in the Lord Jesus Christ – whom Timothy is encouraged to maintain a steadfast and consistent commitment to. And, what’s more, this commitment is to be carried out without any spot or blame.

Timothy had no need to bully people or shame others into accepting and holding onto the gospel. The means and the methods of how we embrace our charge from God matters a lot. By persevering in faith, holiness, and humility, Timothy would preserve himself and be of benefit to his listeners.

Believers are to keep up this spiritual commitment until Christ returns. It is always open season on gospel proclamation and Christian growth and maturity – lived with a gracious spirit.

By looking to Jesus, followers of Christ can maintain their witness. Times of discouragement are bound to come. And in those difficult seasons of life, we are not to change or switch our allegiance to the political powers. As important as government is, politicians are not saviors; and a particular system of government is not going to deliver us from our greatest oppressions.

The Apostle Paul described Jesus as the King of kings and Lord of lords, the blessed and only Ruler. Christ is  sovereign over all earthly powers.

Furthermore, God alone is immortal and lives in unapproachable light. God is pure light, and in the Lord there is no darkness. God’s glory is bright and blinding; therefore, no one can see God. To this God deserves honor and might forever.

The mighty and holy God will fulfill all divine promises. Paul was looking to reinforce some courage in Timothy by reminding him of the sort of God they both serve.

In our current and contemporary world, it’s easy to become discouraged. Injustice abounds. Hardness of heart is everywhere. An inability to truly see one another is rife. And people look everywhere and to anyone who appears successful. They want to know the secret in how to survive and thrive on this earth, in their workplaces, and in their homes.

But it’s no secret. The hard work of relationships is what it takes – both human and divine. There is no replacement or surrogate work to the labor of investing yourself into others lives. There’s no substitute for a relationship with God which involves prayer and basic Scripture reading, worship and spiritual disciplines; and face to face relations with actual real people – getting to know them, their joys, their fears, and what motivates them.

Until we recover things such as spiritual mentoring, spiritual practices, group prayer, congregational worship, and create the time for relationships, we shall continue to struggle with a fundamentally broken world and all of its dysfunctional relationships.

No matter the organization, the neighborhood, the family, or the church, we need real people to do honest real work. Whenever a manager, a block captain, a parent, or a pastor allows themselves to be vulnerable and authentic – and lives on the same level as those they serve – then no one is looking for a secret sauce to success.

The Christian’s path of life is always to involve humility, gentleness, mercy, purity, and peacemaking, in doing the work of right relations with the people around them. This is the way of Christ.

Trying to discover a process or a system – apart from the muck of relationships – will fail, every time. This is the way of Ceasar.

Paul took the time and invested the effort into his relationship with Christ. Then, he put himself in a position to mentor others in the faith. Furthermore, he encouraged people like Timothy to do the same. Apart from this work, there is no Christianity.

Believers in Jesus are here today because of Paul and Timothy and the body of teaching and work they passed on to others who, in turn, did the same.

You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others. (2 Timothy 2:2, NIV)

It’s time to roll up your sleeves and fulfill the calling you have received, the calling of righteousness (right relationships) with both God and others – because Jesus is Lord, and Ceasar is not.

Eternal Father, you gave to your incarnate Son the holy name of Jesus to be the sign of our salvation: Plant in every heart, we pray, the love of him who is the Savior of the world, our Lord Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.
