“I Have Overcome the World” (John 16:25-33)

“Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”

Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.”

“Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (New International Version)

Imagine you are with Jesus in the Upper Room celebrating Passover. And your Lord tells you he is leaving – going back to the Father. After three years of a difficult, yet incredible ministry, there is palpable grief in the room. It’s as if you got sucker-punched. You want this time with Jesus to never end….

Jesus Christ, Son of God, Son of Man, Savior of the world, does not forget you. The Lord is concerned and careful to provide wonderful words of assurance: Father God loves you. I give you my peace. I have overcome the world.

My friend, do you hear the words of Jesus? Do you truly understand what the Lord of all the earth has said to you? The love and peace of Christ has overcome the world. That love and that peace is given to you. You, and not just someone else, possesses the love and peace to overcome the world.

Whenever we encounter trouble; in those times when grief seems to be swallowing us whole; and when all is dark and we cannot see our hand in front of our face – it is in these moments the Lord comes alongside us and communicates a loving divine presence which grants us the peace of settled rest, even if, and especially when, our troubling situations do not change.

If you have had a life largely free of struggle, the privilege of knowing where your next meal is coming from, and the assurance of having your most basic needs met, then please understand that many people throughout the world, right this moment, know nothing of that kind of experience.

However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that needy persons are unhappy, discontent, or bitter. Heavens, no!

Love and peace are neither bound nor limited by adverse circumstances.

In fact, love and peace are known in a much deeper way whenever we have been hated and in conflict. That’s because love thrives and flourishes in an environment of hate; and peace takes root more surely wherever there is disharmony and misunderstanding.

If everything always goes our way, how then would we know the Lord’s great grace to us? How would we ever know God as Provider unless we were in want? How would we know Christ as the Healer unless we were broken? How could we ever know resurrection unless there was a crucifixion?

Jesus specializes in the improbable and the impossible. He comes and lands on the Island of Misfit Toys, and airlifts the discarded ones to be a gift to the world.

You see, this is precisely how we overcome the world: We love and serve, just as our Lord did. Since he overcame, we walk in his footsteps.

The acquisition and presence of peace is anything but passive. Peace has been achieved through a bloody cross and settles within the spirit through an active pursuit of harmony, wholeness, integrity, and love.

Now that we have been put right with God through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. He has brought us by faith into this experience of God’s grace, in which we now live. And so, we boast of the hope we have of sharing God’s glory! We also boast of our troubles, because we know that trouble produces endurance, endurance brings God’s approval, and his approval creates hope. (Romans 5:1-4, GNT)

For the kingdom of God is not food and drink but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. The one who thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and has human approval. Let us then pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding. (Romans 14:17-19, NRSV)

God’s peace and love is free, but it is not cheap. It is obtained smack in the middle of worldly troubles. So, may the peace of God be with you, my friends, now and always.

Almighty and everlasting God, you are the fountain of all peace, spiritual and temporal. We humbly pray, in your great goodness grant us that peace which the world cannot give, that we may ever live in your fear, obedient to your commandments, to the end that you may deliver us from all our enemies, through your dear Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Longing For God (Psalm 63)

O God, you are my God; I seek you;
    my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you,
    as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
    beholding your power and glory.
Because your steadfast love is better than life,
    my lips will praise you.
So I will bless you as long as I live;
    I will lift up my hands and call on your name.

My soul is satisfied as with a rich feast,
    and my mouth praises you with joyful lips
when I think of you on my bed
    and meditate on you in the watches of the night,
for you have been my help,
    and in the shadow of your wings I sing for joy.
My soul clings to you;
    your right hand upholds me.

But those who seek to destroy my life
    shall go down into the depths of the earth;
they shall be given over to the power of the sword;
    they shall be prey for jackals.
But the king shall rejoice in God;
    all who swear by him shall exult,
    for the mouths of liars will be stopped. (New Revised Standard Version)

David, the psalmist, had a great longing for God.

This sort of longing has nothing to do with lustful desires which want something specific under the Christmas tree. To long for God is to have a deep inner wish for fulfillment and connection.

People have all sorts of longings in their lives, because they miss someone or are missing something important.

A parent longs for an estranged child to return, or at least to talk to them.

A spouse wishes to be with their loved one without the ravages of dementia.

A teacher has a deep longing to impact her students in a positive and profound way that will change their lives.

A person longs to see their friend realize the dream they have been seeking.

An individual has been living with chronic pain for years, and longs to be at least pain-free enough to enjoy the simple pleasures of taking a walk, visiting family, or going to a restaurant for a nice meal.

These longings, and thousands more, make up the future hope which keeps us going day after day. And they are all, in one way or another, related to the ultimate longing for divine connection.

Many types of longing come from a place of relationship, of love and support for another. It is this kind of longing that the psalmist had for God. The deep longing to experience a divine/human contact, to commune with the living God, is what motivated and fueled David throughout much of his life.

Like a person looking to satiate their thirst in a hot dry desert, is the one who actively seeks and goes after the longing they have. I believe that every person on planet earth has a deep abiding desire and need for something transcendent in this life, to encounter a power which is higher and greater than us – knowing that the basic nature of this power is loving and good.

My need for communion with God is on the same level as my daily need for water. I cannot survive without either of them.

Spiritual survival requires being watered and fed by an intimate relationship with our Creator. The presence of God is just as necessary and life-sustaining as food. Along with the psalmist David, God’s words are the spiritual food I need to live and survive.

Longing involves memory. Our various longings are often a remembrance of special events, seasons, or people. Deep hope activates those memories, and drives us to prayer, because God has the strength and the ability to honor those honest longings.

The greatness of God, and the divine purposes for this world, are heavy laden with longing. God’s heart longs for humanity to realize a renewed and revitalized relationship with God.

So, the Lord serves humanity in a myriad of ways, bringing deliverance from all that hinders us in a relationship with God, so that we might associate meaningfully and purposefully with what is good, right, and just.

We are invited by God to unpack the gift of faith, and the various spiritual gifts given to us, for the benefit of the church and the world.

God’s steadfast love is indeed better than life itself, because it is beyond what we humans can even conceive of as to what a good life truly is.

God is Love, and Love is God. Love transcends life and brings us to a place of connection beyond what our minds can imagine, and our hearts can only long for.

Since God is always gracious, loving, and good within God’s basic character, God always does what is good and loving. And that makes praise and adoration of God always open season.

Praising God reminds us of what God has done. The Lord is personally invested and involved in God’s big world. Thus, praise is quite appropriate whenever one is going through difficult times; because it accesses memories of God’s help in times past, enabling divine help in the present.

God’s gracious actions are both communal and personal. God not only helps others; God helps me. The Lord’s faithfulness endures throughout all generations. And God is big enough to notice me, and to help me in my own time of need.

Therefore, any occasion is appropriate in coming to God.

Are you in need of rest? Do you need encouragement? Are you in need of some help?

Then, come to God. Praise the Lord. Remember God. Consider the works God has done throughout history for God’s people. Do it during the day while working. Do it at night with your head on the pillow. Do it anytime, anywhere. Because God is there.

The Lord will provide – perhaps not on your timetable, yet God will nonetheless help, often in a way you may not expect.

Faith in God isn’t about trying to avoid God’s anger or wrath; faith is about syncing my wishes and my longings with the heart of God. That is called “repentance.” And it’s the way of finding our great inner longings satisfied.

We must tend to our relationship with the Lord; for God has made it possible to do so.

Be equal to the grandeur and the call of your soul.

May your dreams gradually reveal the destination of your desire.

May a secret Providence guide your thought and nurture your feeling.

May your mind inhabit life with the sureness with which your body inhabits the world.

May your heart never be haunted by ghost-structures of old damage.

May you come to accept your longing as divine urgency.

May you know the urgency with which God longs for you.

Christ the King Sunday (John 18:33-37)

Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” 

Jesus answered, “Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?” 

Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?” 

Jesus answered, “My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom belonged to this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” 

Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?”

Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” (New Revised Standard Version)

Each year in the Christian Calendar, Christ the King Sunday is observed as the final Sunday in the liturgical year. It comes at this time, just before the beginning of Advent, in order to consider an important question.

Since Jesus came to this earth in his incarnation to be a king, we must ask, “What kind of a king was Jesus?”

Christ was not, and is not, a king, a ruler (or any other sort of title one wants to use for an authoritative leader) in the same way as was the Roman Emperor, King Herod, or the regional authority of the time, Pontius Pilate.

Jesus was also not like those in authority such as the Jewish High Priest, the Jewish ruling council of the Sanhedrin, or the local synagogue ruler. And Christ is most definitely not like any sort of present day President, Prime Minister, or petty dictator in any of the world’s nations.

Jesus was a king and a ruler who used his power and authority for those on the underbelly of society, that is, people without much, if any, power or authority.

That means Christ the King is concerned to effect a very different set of values from that of any politically dominant governmental system or society that was or is on this earth.

Whether a person or group of people are seeking to win an election, initiate a coup, or effect a change in government, they want their particular system of governing to be in power. They want to call all the shots in a particular place.

That means there will be winners and losers. There will be people in power, and others without it. Some people will benefit from the system, and others will not. Looking at kingship and/or leadership from that perspective, there is a built in failure rate.

The obsession with winning, at a national level, typically involves securing a strong military. Yet, despite military might, soldiers rarely secure any sort of political solution to anything. All it really does is strongarm others into doing what the powerful want done. It does nothing to change the hearts of people.

People in power can be enamored with their authority to do things. And they don’t like it whenever they are not in control of everything. The kings, rulers, and even religious leaders in Christ’s day, were used to controlling public discourse and even the daily lives of common people.

From that sort of worldly understanding of power, Jesus had no real authority. He was this pathetic person standing before a powerful person. Most people would have been begging for their lives. But not Jesus. Christ knew who was really in charge. And it was not Pilate.

Pilate was flummoxed by the presence of Jesus. From Pilate’s perspective, Jesus was not at all acting like a king ought to. Pilate, in his authoritative role, wanted answers about what was going on. But he didn’t realize that his authority was given to him from a power outside the Roman Empire.

Christ’s kingdom is not of this world. Therefore, the power politics and authority positions of that kingdom are nothing what people like Pilate were used to. There was no way that Pilate could use the typical tactics of manipulation, lies, corruption, and leveraging power to come to a satisfactory outcome for himself.

The values of God’s kingdom are quite different from any political government in this world, either past or present.

Jesus had no need to try and be at the top of Pilate’s system, or of the Roman world. So, he wasn’t even going to try and exercise that kind of authority within it. And neither were his disciples. Clubs and swords and pitched battles would not be happening. There was absolutely no need for it whatsoever.

For us today, that means we serve the interests of humility, gentleness, respect, righteousness, mercy, purity, and peace. We are not here on this earth to engage in the routine and typical ways of earthly power politics.

For the Christian, Jesus is King. But this king isn’t riding around in a chariot or a limousine; he comes to us on a jack ass and driving a Subaru.

Jesus is the king with all the power of the universe, and yet is tortured and killed by those with the local society’s authority. That happened not because of weakness or inability, but because of a completely different set of values which have to do with love defeating hate, instead of an army winning a victory.

A God who is crucified is diametrically different than any other deity or authority which has ever existed. The power of love is the ultimate power of doing what is right, just, and good; and letting truth have its way, no matter what.

Christians everywhere must be reminded, on this Christ the King Sunday, that we serve a sovereign king whose power and authority is used to be a humble servant who meets the needs of others.

All Christians, therefore, ought to embrace and engage in becoming gentle folk who bring humble service to others wherever they go. Seeking power, position, prestige, and pedigree is in direct opposition to the values of God’s kingdom, with Christ as King.

Any sort of Christendom, which seeks to control both government and society, or a Christian Nationalism which intends to ensconce personal agendas into society, ought to be rejected.

Christian Nationalism is nothing more than Grape Nuts; just as the cereal is neither grapes nor nuts, so the political movement is neither Christian nor concerned for national interests.

This is a day for the church to reassess what is most important, to affirm its true values, and to evaluate how it really ought to operate in society.

Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by guilt and shame, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Show Some Basic Human Kindness and Love (Ruth 3:8-18)

At midnight the man was startled and turned over, and there, lying at his feet, was a woman! He said, “Who are you?” And she answered, “I am Ruth, your servant; spread your cloak over your servant, for you are next-of-kin.”

He said, “May you be blessed by the Lord, my daughter; this last instance of your loyalty is better than the first; you have not gone after young men, whether poor or rich. And now, my daughter, do not be afraid, I will do for you all that you ask, for all the assembly of my people know that you are a worthy woman. But now, though it is true that I am a near kinsman, there is another kinsman more closely related than I. Remain this night, and in the morning, if he will act as next-of-kin for you, good; let him do it. But if he is not willing to act as next-of-kin for you, then, as the Lord lives, I will act as next-of-kin for you. Lie down until the morning.”

So she lay at his feet until morning but got up before one person could recognize another, for he said, “It must not be known that the woman came to the threshing floor.” Then he said, “Bring the cloak you are wearing and hold it out.” So she held it, and he measured out six measures of barley and put it on her back; then he went into the town. 

She came to her mother-in-law, who said, “How did things go with you, my daughter?” Then she told her all that the man had done for her, saying, “He gave me these six measures of barley, for he said, ‘Do not go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.’” She replied, “Wait, my daughter, until you learn how the matter turns out, for the man will not rest but will settle the matter today.” (New Revised Standard Version)

Boaz was an unmarried wealthy landowner. He was pious and conscientious. Ruth was a widow, a foreigner from Moab. Naomi was Ruth’s mother-in-law, and also a widow. Naomi and Ruth only had each other.

As one in poverty did in those times, Ruth walked behind the harvesters in the fields during the barley harvest, gleaning whatever was left behind. She was gleaning in the field of Boaz. He noticed.

Boaz was kind enough to make sure that Ruth was able to glean for two people. It turns out that Boaz was an in-law to Naomi, through her late husband Elimelech. Naomi sought to play matchmaker, so that Ruth would be well cared for. So, she instructed Ruth in what to do….

Harvest time in Judah was also a time of celebration and feasting. Late one night, on the barley wheat threshing floor, Boaz lay down to sleep after a day of bringing in the grain, and an evening of eating and drinking.

Doing exactly as her mother-in-law Naomi instructed, Ruth went to threshing floor, and then quietly laid down at the feet of Boaz. At midnight, Boaz was startled and woke up. There, at his feet, was a woman!

“Who are you? What do you want?” asked Boaz. And Ruth made herself known with the humble response, “I am Ruth, your maidservant.”

Ruth continued to follow Naomi’s guidance, and asked that Boaz spread his cloak over her, because he is the next of kin, the relative who could be responsible for engaging a levirate marriage with her (that is, a legal marriage involving in-law’s).

Although sleepy, and maybe even a bit tipsy, Boaz knew immediately that Ruth was asking him to marry her. Pious man that he was, Boaz would likely have realized the imagery of his situation, as likened to the prophet Ezekiel’s description concerning God’s love toward Jerusalem:

I spread the edge of my cloak over you and covered your nakedness: I pledged myself to you and entered into a covenant with you, says the Lord God, and you became mine. (Ezekiel 16:8, NRSV)

In following Naomi’s advice, Ruth put herself in a very vulnerable situation. Yet, Naomi’s observation of Boaz was spot on. Ruth’s faith in, and love for, her mother-in-law was well-placed.

The man Boaz responded favorably to the asking and overture of Ruth. He praised Ruth for her steadfast love and faithfulness; and her willingness to be with him, instead of a younger man.

Arising organically and sincerely from within Boaz was a prayer for God’s blessing upon Ruth. Not only would Boaz act to marry Ruth, but he also assured her that she belongs to God and God’s people.

The cloak of Boaz being spread over Ruth not only symbolized their upcoming levirate marriage, but it also communicated her marriage to God. Ruth was coming into God’s covenant as one of the people, as well as entering the marriage covenant.

I like that Boaz did not regard the actions and words of Ruth as something impertinent, immoral, or inappropriate. He fully recognized that she was operating consistent with the law of God in honoring a family obligation. And Boaz reciprocated by being honored to have been asked, and honored to comply with Ruth’s wishes.

It seems to me that this is love, as it is intended to be with us. We respect one another’s character, and seek to do whatever we can to meet this person’s need. When I love, I want to go out of my way to act on behalf of this person I admire and adore.

Boaz was not under a legal obligation to marry Ruth. He could have done nothing. But love compelled him – a love for Ruth which was grounded in an abiding love for God.

It wasn’t that Boaz should have, or could have, done something to help meet the needs of Ruth and Naomi. Boaz wanted to do something. He wanted to help Ruth. Boaz wanted to show kindness and steadfast love to Ruth. He wanted to fulfill her asking.

Naomi came up with a plan, because she trusted in the mercy, kindness, and generosity of Boaz. And also because she loved her daughter-in-law Ruth, and wanted her to be loved and cared for.

To show his goodwill and intention to fulfill Ruth’s request, he gave her a significant gift of barley. That is, he loaded her up with groceries to take home. This was a sign that Boaz would indeed make sure that the needs of Ruth and Naomi would be met this day, and into the future.

I am struck with how simple this story really is, at it’s core. It’s just three people, who each care. Caring is something that all of us can do, no matter who we are, where we are, or what situation we find ourselves in.

We really can show basic human kindness to another. We can be merciful, just, and generous. We can ask for what we want and need. We can help one another.

Perhaps, then, the real question for each of us is not whether we can speak and act with love, grace, and kindness; the real question is: Will I speak and act with love and mercy?

If we want to live in a world where there is justice, mercy, and love, then we must demonstrate those very things in our own lives, today and every day.

Live the way that you yourself want to be treated. And if you want mercy, generosity, and love from others, then ask for it.

God of steadfast love, help us each day in the midst of things we don’t understand, To those of us who are afraid, give courage To those who are exhausted, give strength To those in despair, give hope.

Comfort us in our struggles, O Loving God, and meet every need. Grant us safety, security and stability, and help us learn the lessons you are giving us, so that we may all work together to make this world a better place. Amen.
