The Grace of Redemption and Gratitude (Exodus 37:1-16)

Bezalel made the ark of acacia wood—two and a half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit and a half high. He overlaid it with pure gold, both inside and out, and made a gold molding around it. He cast four gold rings for it and fastened them to its four feet, with two rings on one side and two rings on the other. Then he made poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold. And he inserted the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark to carry it.

He made the atonement cover of pure gold—two and a half cubits long and a cubit and a half wide. Then he made two cherubim out of hammered gold at the ends of the cover. He made one cherub on one end and the second cherub on the other; at the two ends he made them of one piece with the cover. The cherubim had their wings spread upward, overshadowing the cover with them. The cherubim faced each other, looking toward the cover.

They made the table of acacia wood—two cubits long, a cubit wide and a cubit and a half high. Then they overlaid it with pure gold and made a gold molding around it. They also made around it a rim a handbreadth wide and put a gold molding on the rim. They cast four gold rings for the table and fastened them to the four corners, where the four legs were. The rings were put close to the rim to hold the poles used in carrying the table. The poles for carrying the table were made of acacia wood and were overlaid with gold. And they made from pure gold the articles for the table—its plates and dishes and bowls and its pitchers for the pouring out of drink offerings. This section is, for the most part, a mirror image of Exodus 25:23-40 – which provides meticulous instructions from God on how to build the Ark of the Covenant and the Table that goes with it.

The purpose of this section in Holy Scripture is to give a detailed report that everything the Lord instructed Moses to do, was obediently done, down to every last detail.

This was of upmost importance to the biblical writer, because half-obedience is really not obedience, at all. And there needs to be obedience in order to realize blessing.

God had a purpose with ancient Israel to establish them as God’s people, with God dwelling amongst them. The way this would happen was by means of all the specific prescriptions for the Tabernacle with its worship implements.

Foremost amongst those worship implements was the Ark and the Table, simply because that was the place of meeting with God – and even more specifically – the place of redemption.

The Tabernacle was built, then erected and put into place, just as it was described by God to Moses. And that is the point. The Lord does not change. There was no Plan B or altering the agenda as things went along, because human sin and people’s foibles mucked up everything. No, that’s not how it went down.

Nothing detracts or sidelines God from accomplishing divine purposes – especially when it comes to redeeming people and coming alongside them.

Just because the Israelites disastrously made an idol in the form of a golden calf, and worshiped it as if it were God, did not mean God’s plan failed.

In fact, the Lord made the plan even better by showing exceeding grace in not wiping out the entire lot of them – but instead used the situation to demonstrate steadfast love and accomplish the divine purpose of redemption.

No matter how you slice or dice it, it always comes out as grace.

My hope is that you can see that through all of the details of worship implements and Tabernacle protocol, God bent over backwards to be with the people.

God is holy. God is absolute purity and light. That holiness and purity would incinerate us in a nanosecond if we didn’t have things in place to help us be with God. That was what the Ark and the Table helped to do for Israel.

There are times in Holy Scripture when things get repeated. Repetition, according to many scholars, communicates emphasis. The repeated details of the Ark and the Table, as well as all the other articles associated with worship, communicate the heart of God in wanting us to have access to the divine. In other words, its repeated because it’s important.

Access, redemption, worship, and mercy are all important for the believer. We learn from today’s seemingly mundane verses that:

  • Sin must be addressed in order to have access to God
  • A way has been made for us to be with God
  • We are enabled and empowered to approach God
  • We have received the mercy of redemption from God
  • We are to therefore give mercy to others through table fellowship and forgiveness
  • And we are to give thanks and have gratitude in our hearts to God

Listening to the instructions of God, obeying them, and enjoying them is at the heart of good religion. May it be so, to the glory of God.

Accept, O Lord, our thanks and praise for all that you have
done for us. We thank you for the splendor of the whole
creation, for the beauty of this world, for the wonder of life,
and for the mystery of love.

We thank you for the blessing of family and friends, and for
the loving care which surrounds us on every side.

We thank you for setting us at tasks which demand our best
efforts, and for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy
and delight us.

We thank you also for those disappointments and failures
that lead us to acknowledge our dependence on you alone.

Above all, we thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the
truth of his Word and the example of his life; for his steadfast
obedience, by which he overcame temptation; for his dying,
through which he overcame death; and for his rising to life
again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom.

Grant us the gift of your Spirit, that we may know him and
make him known; and through him, at all times and in all
places, may give thanks to you in all things. Amen.

What Will You Do with Jesus? (John 5:1-18)

Sometime later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”

“Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.

The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”

But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ”

So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”

The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.

Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.

So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. During one of the yearly Jewish festivals, on a Sabbath day, a miracle happened. Miracles of healing are typically accompanied by celebration and joy. But not so much with this one.

It’s one of those things about living in a messed up world of broken systems, that an invalid can start walking and there are people who have frowns and furrowed brows about it.

Granted, the man who was healed by Jesus may seem a bit hard to like in some ways. We don’t really know what he was into, but when Christ bestows healing on you, then says to stop sinning, it’s probably a significant sin to warrant the Lord’s exhortation.

Regardless of any sort of sin, the man appears to be paraplegic. Especially in the ancient world, this meant all sorts of problems had to be navigated – such as needing others to literally carry you around (no wheelchair or handicapped accessible anything), long periods of social isolation, lack of bodily control over your bowels and bladder, and the continual needs for cleanliness.

This made the man hard to like by many people just because he likely had strong body odors and had to crawl to get around if no one would help. He would not have been pleasant to look at. But he would have to make sure you did because, in the absence of any charity, the guy’s only option was to beg.

I’m glad there are greater forces in the world than indifference and dislike. There is grace – which is an act of bestowing honor and/or forgiveness to another person. It is not dependent upon whether one deserves it. Grace chooses not to hold something over or against another. It is a deep concern for others that comes from within and not from without.

Another gracious act that Jesus did was to honor the man’s dignity by respecting him with a question. By asking a question, we don’t assume we know what’s best for another. Sincere questions acknowledge another’s basic humanity. “Do you want to get well?” Jesus asked.

In the life of being an invalid and having little control over much of anything, including one’s own body, being asked a question is to receive the gift of autonomy.

There are many times in my work as a hospital chaplain that I speak with patients who don’t have a lot of control in their lives. I go out of my way to ask questions such as, “May I come in?” “Is it alright with you if I pull up a chair and sit down?” “Would you be okay telling me about what is going on?” “May I pray with you?”

This is important, because there are too many other people in this world who would just barge into a room, act like they own the place, and talk at them, and not with them – hence reinforcing to the person that they’re nothing compared to others, that they don’t have any real say.

The man’s response to Jesus was to essentially say that he is alone. He has no one to help him. Even though the man is in a city, surrounded by hundreds and thousands of others, he is lonely.

Not anymore. Jesus saw him, even inquired about him and learned about the man. Jesus Christ, the Lord of all, cared about a non-descript invalid and was sincerely curious about him. In a world of everyone for himself, Jesus championed the lonely and the lost.

A simple command to obey was all. Christ told the man to pick up his mat and walk. That’s it. Just as words created the world, so a few words created a whole new life for the man. So, he got up, and he walked.

It’s interesting that the religious leaders never seemed to notice the man when he was lame, but now that he’s up and walking around, they pay attention to his apparent work on a Sabbath.

The invalid was validated by Jesus, but Jesus, the one validated by the Father, was invalidated by the religious leaders, who are the spiritual invalids.

It was against the (their) rules to carry something around. Apparently, it was okay for people to be lonely, not contribute to society in meaningful and dignifying ways, and to suffer; but it’s not okay to walk and carry a mat.

Even worse, is anyone who would heal on the Sabbath and tell the healed person to walk and carry a mat. It was so bad, apparently, that it warranted persecuting such a person. But that’s what happens when people are forced to serve rules, instead of the rules serving people.

On top of it all, Jesus was working; and he justified it by stating that his Father keeps working. This was dangerously close to blasphemy by likening himself to God. For the religious leaders, not only was Jesus unethical in breaking the law, but he was also theologically immoral; he claimed a special relation with God.

The more that laypeople get to know Jesus, the more compelling he becomes; they want to follow him. But the more that clergy discover Jesus, the more angry they become and want to do away with him.

Ultimately, it is Jesus we must contend with, and not the law and our interpretations of scripture. We need to decide what we are going to do with Jesus… what will you do?…

Learn To Do Right (Isaiah 1:1-4, 16-20)

The vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah son of Amoz saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

Hear me, you heavens! Listen, earth!
    For the Lord has spoken:
“I reared children and brought them up,
    but they have rebelled against me.
The ox knows its master,
    the donkey its owner’s manger,
but Israel does not know,
    my people do not understand.”

Woe to the sinful nation,
    a people whose guilt is great,
a brood of evildoers,
    children given to corruption!
They have forsaken the Lord;
    they have spurned the Holy One of Israel
    and turned their backs on him…

Wash and make yourselves clean.
    Take your evil deeds out of my sight;
    stop doing wrong.
Learn to do right; seek justice.
    Defend the oppressed.
Take up the cause of the fatherless;
    plead the case of the widow.

“Come now, let us settle the matter,”
    says the Lord.
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
    they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson,
    they shall be like wool.
If you are willing and obedient,
    you will eat the good things of the land;
but if you resist and rebel,
    you will be devoured by the sword.”

Whenever the prophet has a vision, everyone better perk up and take notice.

After the northern Jewish kingdom of Israel fell to the Assyrians in 722 B.C.E., they lost their national identity. The southern Jewish kingdom of Judah, and its capitol Jerusalem, continued to exist for nearly a century and a half – even though they were vassals of either the Assyrians or the Babylonians.

Yet, Judah still functioned as its own nation in a semi-independent state. It was during this time that the prophet Isaiah had his vision, under the kingship of those descended from King David.

The initial section of Isaiah’s prophecy is a series of oracles that establish the relationship between God and the nation of Judah, especially Jerusalem. The gist of God’s message is that the people are guilty of lots of sins.

However, the Lord left a gracious opening for them; their fate was not yet sealed. The nation could repent of their sins and experience a future restoration. God wanted to bring a resolution, and not have the people keep going in their unhealthy ways.

Throughout Isaiah’s vision, God is presented as a Father, with the children being Israel (both northern and southern kingdoms). And Father God has a complaint against them. The people’s principal sins were rebellion and ignorance. They spurned God’s authority, and did not accept their family intimacy with God.

Thus, the Lord is quite disappointed with the people. Heavenly witnesses are called to hear the charges of wrongdoing. The troubles of the nation were to be interpreted as warnings and disciplines, meant to lead them to stop and do right. Yet it seems that the warnings go unheeded by the people. It appears that God’s efforts to woo the people back are in vain.

Although the people’s continued sacrificial worship is merely done as a mere perfunctory act, and without true hearts of devotion for what is just and right, God offered them a chance to make things right, so that they could do justice and embrace righteousness.

God made it clear what it would take to repent: learn to do good; seek justice; recuse the oppressed; defend the orphan; plead for the widow. God even issued an invitation for a divine/human dialogue to happen.

Grace and cleansing from sin are possible, that is, if the people are willing and obedient, instead of remaining rebellious and refusing to do what is right, just, and good.

The nation was at a crossroads and had to make a decision. Would they choose wisely or foolishly?

Decision-making is critical. Some choices are harder than others. Yet the ability to decide is a God-given gift and ability.

Making decisions is fraught with consequences; we may try to anticipate or ignore what might happen with a particular choice. And how we go about decision-making is important. Who do we listen to? What information do we need? How will this choice shake out in the end?

Intentions are not choices, but are simply a mental resolve to do or not do something, at some point. And to not make a decision is to have already made a decision to either procrastinate or not do anything at all.

There are also decisions of duty. This may or may not be admirable. There is also the choice of attitude and energy given to the decision – because a choice of doing one’s duty can be done with joy or grumpiness, excitement or bitterness, with a bright disposition or a flat sullen affect.

It’s not really hard to guess or assess the choices of the people in Judah and Jerusalem in Isaiah’s day. They were doing an outward duty of temple worship, but without any heart to it.

Many of the people looked upon their duty as a sort of magical talisman that would ward off any trouble or army invasion. With that kind of approach, the people looked upon the rest of their time as their own, as discretionary, as the choice to do whatever they wanted to do.

If their business practices were dubious and not quite right, then big deal. After all, they give their money at the temple.

If the leaders played favorites and overlooked the needy person among them, then so what? The poor and oppressed can work harder, right?

And if orphans and widows – who were the most vulnerable persons in society – were not completely cared for, then that’s sad, but too bad for them.

I can picture an ancient city council saying something like, “We have a lot on our plate, dealing with foreign powers, the economy, and political issues. Those needy persons need to get a clue. It’s their own fault for hanging around and not leaving the city for greener pastures. Not our problem.”

Oh, but it very much was their problem. It was everyone’s problem, and each person’s responsibility, to ensure that God’s justice, goodness, and righteousness was infused throughout the entire city and nation.

Hence, the reason for the book of Isaiah. Tackle the moral and ethical problems head on before it’s too late and the gravity of judgment presses everyone out of the land.

What’s needed is a willing heart inclined to walk into divine obedience, without any talkback, and without any negotiations or deals.

God is merciful, and is willing to talk it out. But justice must be done. Needs must be met. People must be cared for. The Lord’s will must be done, here on earth, as it is always done in heaven. Is this what you are about, or not? Will you learn to do right?

Most merciful God, shine the light of your gracious love upon my cold hard heart. Enlighten my mind and dispel the darkness; speak the truth and help me obey; and have pity upon me. Forgive me yet again of my offenses, transgressions, and guilty acts. Grant me the grace to serve you with faithfulness and care for your people with love and purity, today and always. Amen.

Speak To the Dry Bones (Ezekiel 37:1-14)

The power of the Lord came over me. The Lord brought me out by his Spirit and put me down in the middle of a valley. The valley was filled with bones. He led me all around them. I saw that there were very many bones at the bottom of the valley, and they were very dry.

Then he asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?”

I answered, “Only you know, Almighty Lord.”

Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones. Tell them, ‘Dry bones, listen to the Lord’s word. This is what the Almighty Lord says to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you will live. I will put ligaments on you, place muscles on you, and cover you with skin. I will put breath in you, and you will live. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’ ”

So I prophesied as I was commanded. While I was prophesying, suddenly there was a rattling noise, and the bones came together, one bone attaching itself to another. As I looked, I saw that ligaments were on them, muscles were on them, and skin covered them. Yet, there was no breath in them.

Then the Lord said to me, “Prophesy to the breath! Prophesy, son of man. Tell the breath, ‘This is what the Almighty Lord says: Come from the four winds, Breath, and breathe on these people who were killed so that they will live.’ ”

So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath entered them. Then they came to life and stood on their feet. There were enough of them to form a very large army.

The Lord also said to me, “Son of man, all the people of Israel are like these bones. The people say, ‘Our bones are dry, and our hope has vanished. We are completely destroyed.’ So prophesy. Tell them, ‘This is what the Almighty Lord says: My people, I will open your graves and take you out of them. I will bring you to Israel. Then, my people, you will know that I am the Lord, because I will open your graves and bring you out of your graves. I will put my Spirit in you, and you will live. I will place you in your own land. Then you will know that I, the Lord, have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.’ ” (God’s Word Translation)

Dry. It might be good for humor or a martini. Dry, however, doesn’t feel good when it’s a time of spiritual dryness.

Perhaps you are dry. It seems the entire world is dry. Wars, conflict, death, violence, uncertainty, unrest, and upset people everywhere is evidence that there is dryness across the earth. Many institutions, organizations, companies, and faith communities have become so withered and dry, that they have folded and died.

The hard circumstances of our world, stress in our families, and challenging personal lives may easily create anxiety, and, so, parch our souls and leave our spirits bone dry. There is, however, a God who can breathe new life into us and move us from old-worn ruts in our thinking, feeling, and behaving, to renewed ways of being in the world. 

The prophet Ezekiel’s vision is a promise and a hope of resurrection, revival, and new life. Regardless of who we are and the situations in front of us, we are all displaced people – cast out of Eden and in need of restoration. 

We, along with the ancient Israelites, are in exile and long to return to our true home with God. Along with St. Augustine we declare that our “hearts are forever restless until they find their rest in God.”

Maybe you are presently experiencing the dry bones of hopelessness and despondency. Perhaps you are in a dark night of the soul where all of life seems like one huge rut. It could be you are wondering if God is really listening, or is even there at all, because of the dry bones surrounding you.

In my work as a hospital chaplain I often encounter patients who are, ironically, bone dry from too much drinking. Their alcoholism is like a massive desert littered with thousands of dry bones. Attempting to reanimate themselves while dulling the pain of incredibly hard dry circumstances, they drink liter after liter of “spirits” to replace the dead spirit inside them. Some become so dry and dead inside their immaterial selves, that they seek to end their material lives through suicide.

But it need not be this way. We might believe we will be able to live life and pursue God better without danger or hardship – that somehow difficulty is not to be part of life. The dry bones exist, however, as an opportunity for God to give life. That’s why Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s reaction to his exile in a Soviet labor camp in Siberia was to bless it, because it was there he said:

“I discovered that the meaning of earthly existence lies not, as we have grown used to thinking, in prospering, but in the development of the soul.”

God not only gives life; God restores life. And this is an important truth to know and remember in the inevitable dry times of our lives. God is not only a helper; the Lord reanimates us from spiritual rigor mortis to lively resurrection through breathing on us. And this is done for a reason. Jesus came to his disciples after his resurrection and said:

God resuscitates us for a purpose, so that we might be a blessing to the world. Faith is not only a possession to keep, but a gift to give. We glorify God in loving one another and loving the world as Jesus did.  God could have resurrected the bones without Ezekiel. Instead, the Lord used Ezekiel and had him participate in the revival by speaking to the bones. 

Such a challenge to speak to the dry bones can seem overwhelming to us. What do you do when your life is upended, even shattered – when such a profound change comes to you that it is impossible for your life to be as it was? 

The questions and commands of God seemed totally absurd to Ezekiel, speaking to dead dry bones. Yet methinks we ought to operate more in the realm of the absurd than in the realm of the safe routine.

Perhaps we ought to expect our faith to be exercised and look for God to breathe new life into the dead and decaying. To believe that something, someone, or even myself can change is to have internalized this amazing story of dry bones living again. 

Our self-imposed graves cannot hold us because God is among us.

We need a genuine heaven-sent, Spirit-breathed, glorious reanimation in which God sends reviving grace and raises the dead. 

Lord of Resurrection, please be attentive to our prayers; and make what is impossible possible:

For those without hope – feeling dried up and cut off from you – open their graves and bring them back to the land of the living.

For those spiritually oppressed – held captive by sin – release them from their chains and let them go! For those who weep – lost and lifeless in a tomb of fear and shame – give them the peace of your presence, and show them what your love can do.

For those complacent – withering on the vine, and living a dull dry existence without any spiritual vigor – awaken them, O Lord! Breathe into them new life!

Pour out your Spirit, gracious God, and awaken all kinds of people to a revival of obedience, love, and courage.

May your people be so full of your Spirit that life comes rolling off our tongues and the strength of life empowers our hands for service. Amen.
