The Good Shepherd (John 10:11-18)

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. When the hired hand sees the wolf coming, he leaves the sheep and runs away. That’s because he isn’t the shepherd; the sheep aren’t really his. So the wolf attacks the sheep and scatters them. He’s only a hired hand and the sheep don’t matter to him.

“I am the good shepherd. I know my own sheep and they know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. I give up my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that don’t belong to this sheep pen. I must lead them too. They will listen to my voice and there will be one flock, with one shepherd.

“This is why the Father loves me: I give up my life so that I can take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I give it up because I want to. I have the right to give it up, and I have the right to take it up again. I received this commandment from my Father.” (Common English Bible)

This is a beautiful passage of Scripture, as we look at it now, two-thousand years removed from its original context. Yet, at the time, Jesus spoke these words after a smack down conflict with the religious authorities, complete with plans to stone him.

In healing a man born blind, Jesus not only restored his physical sight, but he also gave him clear spiritual vision. In contrast, Christ’s opponents remained in their spiritual darkness, unable to see the light of life. And in their spiritual blindness, they couldn’t lead anybody anywhere without falling into a pit and making things worse.

Jesus is the good shepherd, the caring leader who is aware, and has the sheep’s best interests in mind, and at heart. The religious authorities proved to be bad shepherds who only wanted to fleece the sheep of their wool; such persons steal, harm, and kill. Jesus, however, offers abundant life.

The good shepherd provides altruistic care at a great cost. Whereas the hired hand runs away when the wolves come and threaten the flock, Jesus as the Good Shepherd puts his life on the line to protect the sheep. Three times we are told that Christ lays his life down for the benefit of others.

Bad shepherds have no such concern. And, unfortunately, such leaders have been around ever since the fall of humanity into sin. They cut and run when things get risky and dangerous.

This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “Woe to you shepherds of Israel who only take care of yourselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock? You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock. You have not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or bound up the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally. 

So they were scattered because there was no shepherd, and when they were scattered they became food for all the wild animals. My sheep wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. They were scattered over the whole earth, and no one searched or looked for them.” (Ezekiel 34:2-6, NIV)

Jesus, in his incarnation, embodies the love and concern of God for the people of this world. Christ takes the initiative to do what needs to be done for the benefit of the at-risk sheep.

For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “I myself will search for my sheep and look after them. As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness. I will bring them out from the nations and gather them from the countries, and I will bring them into their own land. I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in all the settlements in the land. I will tend them in a good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel will be their grazing land.

There they will lie down in good grazing land, and there they will feed in a rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down, declares the Sovereign Lord. I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy. I will shepherd the flock with justice.” (Ezekiel 34:11-16, NIV)

Since Jesus is the Good Shepherd, he has the unique ability and authority to decide who is in the sheep fold, and who is out. Nobody else gets to make those sorts of decisions. This way, ultimate issues of eternal life and abundant life are handled with perfect justice and righteousness.

It’s okay that this is all a mystery to us. We sheep need only to keep the Shepherd in our line of sight, and let him do his job of caring for us – without whining or complaining. After all, we could easily have a bad shepherd herding us around like a bunch of stupid cows, and treating us with indifference, even meanness.

The Holy Trinity of God – Father, Son, and Spirit – work as One. The Father loves the Son and the Spirit, and also loves those whom the Son and Spirit have touched. The Son loves the Father and the Spirit, and obeys all things from the Father, while listening to the Spirit. And the Spirit loves the Father and the Son, knowing them intimately and always operating in love for the benefit of the sheep’s deliverance from wolves.

In particular, the Son, Jesus, lays down his own life, but takes it up again. He does so because of love. The perfect unity and love of the blessed Holy Trinity spills out in Christ’s care for us.

The laying down and taking up of life on the part of the Good Shepherd is not only an expression of great love and faithfulness toward us sheep, but it is also a deep abiding love and commitment toward the Father from whom all blessings flow.

To put it another way, this motley flock of sheep are purposely drawn into the unity, harmony, and love between the Father and the Son. And when we glimpse and experience such overwhelming love, we choose to remain connected to this incredible loving dance.

Our world is much too characterized by selfish concerns and shortsighted actions. In the loving embrace of the Good Shepherd, we have an opportunity to experience peace and rest, grace and abundance, light and life. To know such love is to never turn back to old self-centered ways of living.

Shepherd of all, by laying down your life for the flock, you reveal your love for all. Lead us from the place of death to the place of abundant life, so that guided by your care for us, we may rightly offer our lives in love for you and our neighbors. Amen.

Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The devil had already decided that Judas son of Simon Iscariot would betray Jesus. And during supper Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands and that he had come from God and was going to God, got up from supper, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. 

Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus answered, “You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet.”

Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no share with me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” Jesus said to him, “One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you.” For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had reclined again, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Very truly, I tell you, slaves are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them.If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them….

“Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (New Revised Standard Version)

Today is Maundy Thursday. It is a time in Holy Week to reflect upon the great love of Christ for humanity, as well as much of humanity’s great resistance to that divine love.

The word “Maundy” is the Latin word for “commandment.” It’s a reference to Christ’s mandate for his followers to love one another. And Jesus gave his disciples an example of this love in a way they would never forget.

The jaw-dropping illustration of love for each other is preceded by setting the stage. It is the Last Supper, the final meal of Jesus with the disciples. Christ’s imminent crucifixion is very much tied to the Jewish Passover. Just as the festival is about to happen, dominating the spiritual landscape of Jerusalem, so the cross of Christ looms heavy in the Upper Room. The hour is nearly upon them.

And only Jesus seems to know the brevity of the moment. He knows that Judas is about to betray him. Events that were prophesied centuries earlier are about to be set in motion. Every word and action of Jesus at this Supper is formed and informed by what is about to take place in the next few days.

We are meant to understand, as observers to this Upper Room meal, that Jesus not only knows what is happening, but that he also has control over the unfolding events. Satan may believe that he knows what’s going on and can influence Judas for diabolical purposes; but Jesus is really the One in charge. Even the workings of the devil are used for the divine agenda. Every event – whether meant for good or for ill – shall be bent toward the will of God.

The example, the capstone of all Christ’s teaching, is now divulged and acted out. The disciples themselves are participants in the drama; and they are aghast at what Jesus is doing. Christ proceeds to divest himself, humble himself, and serve them all by washing their feet.

Jesus intends his actions to be followed. Whereas the disciples likely believed that, over the past three years, they were being groomed for ruling in God’s new government, Christ was informing them that they will be servants in that new rule and reign of God. Yes, they will be leaders; but it will be a servant-leadership that uses its authority to love others.

Not everyone was immediately on board with this type of leadership and service. That’s because there were those who found it extremely hard to accept such a love as this.

Peter had serious difficulties with this foot washing thing. Maybe Peter thought that the roles should be reversed; he should be serving Jesus, and not the other way around. It could be that Peter was simply clueless or confused. Or perhaps he believed this action to be socially inappropriate and foolish. Yet, no matter what was going through Peter’s mind, he blatantly resisted the love of Christ.

Jesus would have none of this resistance to his loving service. Sharing in Jesus involves being served by him, even in so lowly and intimate a form as foot washing. Bottom line: the disciples of Jesus must be washed by him.

Peter (bless his extrovert mouth and heart) totally changes from rejection to the foot washing, to wanting a complete bath. Even in this, however, Jesus brings the zealot spirit down a few notches. He brought Peter to where he needs to be, and not where Peter wants to be.

The whole washing of feet is an act of love and service that Jesus performed for them. Judas is there, too, getting his feet washed, as well. The example Jesus set was not simply one of service to an elite group of believers. The love of disciples for one another includes even those people we might prefer to forget.

Slaves were the ones who performed the service of washing feet whenever guests arrived at the master’s house. For the Christian, since our own Master initiated this practice, we ought also to love one another through meeting even the most mundane and stinky of needs. After all, we are not above our Master.

Yet, Christ considers us friends, and not necessarily as slaves, and even grants us an inheritance with him. Meeting needs requires the utilization of love.

It seems that Peter wanted to make the symbolic practice of washing feet something it was not meant to be. He asked for a lavish display of cleanliness for his entire body. Perhaps Peter thought that if you’re going to make a mark and a statement, then really go all out and do it!

For sure, Peter didn’t really know what he was saying. Jesus told Peter as much. But later, Jesus assured Peter, and all the disciples, that they indeed would, in time, understand all that he was opening up for them.

Of utmost value to Jesus was to have his disciples be driven by what drives he himself: love. Being a Christ follower is only secondarily about what one knows, and primarily about how one loves.

Christians have been profoundly loved by God through Jesus Christ. And what we do with that received love is of great importance to Jesus. As the Apostle Paul would say later to a young Corinthian Church, “Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.” (1 Corinthians 8:1)

On this Maundy Thursday, it is more than appropriate to contemplate the incredible love shown to the original disciples, and toward us, all these centuries later. Let this contemplation compel us to put a great deal of thought and conversation into the best ways of loving the people in front of us with actions that have real meaning for them.

O God of love,
giver of concord,
through your only Son
you have given us a new commandment
that we should love one another
even as you have loved us,
the unworthy and the wandering,
and gave your beloved Son for our life and salvation.

Monday of Holy Week (John 12:1-11)

Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him. Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’s feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 

But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” (He said this not because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) 

Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”

When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came not only because of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death as well, since it was on account of him that many of the Jews were deserting and were believing in Jesus. (New Revised Standard Version)

Sharing a meal around a table is much more than just eating some food together. There is the chance to look one another in the eye. An opportunity is afforded to truly see one another and find acceptance. The conditions are ripe for receiving the blessing of blessings.

Please notice with me that on this last week of Christ’s earthly life and ministry, the people who are around the table with Jesus. He shares his cup with his disciples, including both women and men. Mary and Martha are there, along with Peter, James, and John, and, of course, Judas Iscariot, as well.

Jesus, those various people, and others, had the great privilege of looking into the eyes of Jesus, and having Jesus look directly into theirs. It appears, however, that not everyone took advantage of this situation. But Mary did. She evidences having looked into the face of Jesus, and having Jesus gaze into her eyes with divine love.

To look, to see, to gaze, is to connect. To look away and not see, is to disconnect. It is the difference between acceptance and rejection. Jesus looked as long as he could at the friend he loved.

Let us never forget that the presence of God needs to be experienced – not just in the mind, nor even only in the heart – but as a feeling in every cell of the body.

Christ’s divine gaze communicated more than words ever could. Mary knew she belonged with God, and became convinced she was accepted and loved. So, she did what a person who has been touched with the eyes does: Mary responded with the most heartfelt devotion she could, with what she had at the time.

Mary anointed the feet of Jesus with expensive perfume by using her own hair to apply it. She shared in the presence and in the love of Christ.

This really ought to make complete sense to the one reading this story whose life has been seen and touched by Jesus. For through such divine love, we become a witness in testifying to the light, much like John the Baptist. The one devoted to Jesus understands that they are not even worthy to untie the thong of Christ’s sandal.

Women never touch a rabbi. Yet, long ago in the town of Bethany in Judea, a woman was worthy to do even more than untie a sandal – Mary was permitted to anoint Christ’s feet. The house became filled not only with the fragrance of the perfume, but also with the aroma of Mary’s witness to us of Jesus and his incredible work in her life as a disciple.

In considering such a story on this Monday of Holy Week, it’s easy to focus on what Mary did, how much it truly cost her, and even on the pathetic and judgmental reaction of Judas to it all. Yet, here we see, if we are looking, what Jesus does for Mary.

The love of Jesus turned Mary into a witness. Jesus lifted her up, even above all the men. And that is what Christ continually did for the lowly, the outcast, the ostracized, the poor. For to them belongs the dominion of God.

Through a simple heartfelt response to Christ’s love, we are filled with the aroma of God, experience a cup of blessing, and see the light of Jesus for us. What’s more, the world’s judgmental spirit is undone. Judas is silenced, along with all of our petty selfish agendas.

Mary directs us to Jesus, and to all those who were previously unseen, unloved, and rejected. Mercy simultaneously puts away the judgmental spirit so it is not seen, while bringing the poor in spirit into the light of God’s grace and love.

Merciful and loving God, Your name is glorified even in the anguish of your Son’s death. Grant us the courage to receive your anointed servant who embodies a wisdom and love that is foolishness to the world. Empower us in witness so that all the world may recognize in the scandal of the cross the mystery of reconciliation. Amen.

Jesus the King (Mark 11:1-11)

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”

They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,

“Hosanna!”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”

“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve. (New International Version)

We are presently in the 12 Days of Christmas (December 25–January 5), the annual celebration of Christ’s birth on the Christian Calendar. It may seem odd that the Revised Common Lectionary daily readings have included a text associated with Palm Sunday. However, this is reminder to us that Jesus was born a king – which is why old King Herod saw a little baby as such a threat. (Matthew 2:1-18)

“Christ” is not the surname of Jesus, but instead is a title, meaning “anointed one.” In other words, in the New Testament Gospels, Jesus is referred to as an anointed king. It was broadly understood, within the religious milieu of the ancient Jews, that the Messiah (the Hebrew term for Christ) would come and beat up God’s enemies, restore God’s people to their former glory, and usher in an everlasting state of peace.

Jerusalem had a history as the royal city – the place where ancient Jewish kings lived and ruled. So, most ancient Jews made a clear connection between the Messiah, the king, returning to reign in Jerusalem. They anticipated that the City of David would once again be the seat of power, without any meddling Gentiles to complicate things.

So, when Jesus entered Jerusalem – in what turned out to be the final week of his earthly life – many people looked upon this as a triumphal entry. He was close to ascending the ancient throne. The disciples of Jesus were waiting for this, and ready for a future of greatness and glory alongside their Rabbi.

Not only did people lay their palm fronds on the road in front of him declaring the ancient refrain, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Psalm 118:26) but they also added an explicit reference to the days of King David stating, “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David!” The city was awash in the messianic hope of no longer being subject to foreign rule.

Yet we know the tragic and ironic end of the week. Jesus knew it, too, even at the time. He knew what fate awaited him by entering Jerusalem (Mark 8:31; 10:33-34). And Jesus knew without a shadow of a doubt that he was not going to be a king who gains and keeps power through military might and the bloodshed of war. Instead, only his own blood would be offered, as a sacrifice for many. The power of Love will overcome any and every earthly power.

Those with the eyes to see and the spirit to discern could understand this Jesus riding on a humble donkey instead of the proud warhorse. It made complete sense. Jesus did not enter this world with the fanfare of the rich and powerful, but quietly slipped onto the earth in a non-descript and poor Jewish family. His birth, life, and ministry, were all counter cultural. So, why not also his eventual death, resurrection, ascension, and glorification?

Yes, Jesus is a king. But no, he is not a king in any conventional sense. It is Jesus, beginning with his incredible and unexpected incarnation, who helps us reimagine what power and authority can and ought to look like.

All the trappings of control we can get so enamored about, such as wielding influence through economic wealth, social status, political power, and religious weight, all get tossed aside as mere stuffed animals compared to the real deal of moral dignity, ethical love, and compassionate justice shown to people who had absolutely no ability to either pay back Jesus or prop up a throne for him to sit upon.

Jesus is a king who gives his life for the healing of humanity – all people everywhere – including the ones we don’t much like or care about. I have no problem calling Jesus a king, just as long as we understand what sort of kingship we are actually talking about.

I serve King Jesus because he throws a monkey wrench into oppressive systems that seek to keep other people under a heavy hand of injustice. My allegiance is with Christ the Lord because he uses his prodigious authority to bring peace, light, wholeness, and integrity to all the places of the world (and the human heart) that are dark and clueless.

Today I celebrate in this Christmas season the birth of a baby who was born to die to the world and for the world. I rejoice with the angels that Christ is born in Bethlehem, the king of kings and lord of lords, the prince of peace who himself became peace so that we might live in peace.

May you discover deliverance from guilt, shame, and regret, through the One who came and was wounded for us so that we might be healed. Amen.
